Philly Men’s College Soccer Week in Review – September 16th Edition

In weekly action Drexel and Temple broke into the win column.  The Dragons were involved in another 2 – 1 game, but this time they were on the positive side of the ledger defeating Bucknell.  Earlier in the week Drexel was trending the right was as they earned a draw at NJIT.  In the win at Bucknell Phillip Burckhardt and Adam Nork scored their first collegiate goals.  Temple got their first win dominating Lafayette in a 3 – 0 victory on North Broad Street.  Lukas Fernandes had two goals in the game. Overall the Dragons (1 – 0 – 1) and the Owls (1 – 0 – 0) were unbeaten in weekly action.   

The Explorers, Quakers, and Hawks split during the week.  La Salle won their second straight game defeating LIU giving them a 3 – 0 home record.  The win streak ended at Rider.  Penn won against visiting Marist, but fell at #19 St. John’s for their first loss of the year.  The Red Storm got the lone goal in the 80th minute.  Saint Joe’s got their second win in a row against Stony Brook, but the streak ended at Marist on a goal in the 70th minute in a game where the Hawks faced an 11 – 2 deficit in shots on goal. 

Villanova had a busy week with three games, but went 1 – 2 over the schedule.  The Wildcats were involved in three 1- 0 games winning over Fordham, but lost at Penn State and Maryland.

The men’s teams are in the midst of their non-conference schedule as national teams such as St. John’s, Penn State, and Maryland appear on the schedules. Conference play will begin soon.

Week of September 9 – September 16, 2019

DREXEL 1 – 3 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 CAA

Results – Tied 1 – 1 (2 OT) at NJIT, Won 2 – 1 at Bucknell

Summary – Chris Donovan scored his team-best third goal of the season converting a deflection.  Francisco Rodriguez da Palma had the assist.  At Bucknell Cameron Sanders turned in 5 saves and 2 at NJIT. He was named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Defender of the Week.

Next Game – 9/17 vs. George Mason

LA SALLE 3 – 2 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10 

Results – Won 1 – 0 vs. LIU, Lost 2 – 0 at Rider

Summary – Pat McCarthy posted his second goal of the year against LIU.  The win streak ended at Rider.  Goalie Brett Werner made a season-high 7 saves against the Broncos.

PENN – 2 – 1 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Ivy League

ResultsWon 1 – 0 vs. Marist, Lost 1 – 0 at #19 St. John’s

Summary – The University of Pennsylvania earned another shutout win against Marist.  Joey Bhangdia got the golden goal (his second goal of the season) in the 82nd minute of play. The Red and Blue have a three-game home stand coming up.

Next Game – 9/17 vs. Rutgers

SAINT JOSEPH’S  2 – 3 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 3 – 0 vs. Stony Brook, Lost 1 – 0 at Marist

Summary – Ritchie Barry scored his second straight game-winner in the home game against Stony Brook.  Joseph Boehm also had a two-game streaks in wins and shutouts.  SJU has a five-game homestand on the schedule.

Next Game – 9/17 vs. William & Mary

TEMPLE 1 – 3 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 AAC

Results – Won 3 – 0 vs. Lafayette

Summary – In the Lafayette victory goals by Lukas Fernandes and Mickael Borger (his first) cane within two minutes of one another. Fernandes was the Soccer Six Player of the Week while Borger earned Rookie of the Week honors. Goalie Simon Lefebvre posted a clean slate over Leopards.

Next Game – 9/17 vs. Delaware

VILLANOVA 4 – 2 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Big East

Results – Won 1 – 0 (2 OT) vs. Fordham, Lost 1 – 0 at Penn State, Lost 1 – 0 at Maryland

Summary – The Wildcats were involved in three one-goal games.  The win over Fordham came in the 102nd minute on a goal by Lyam MacKinnon, who leads the team with 8 points, for the fourth triumph in a row for Nova.  Goalie Carson Williams set a new program record getting five consecutive shutouts.  Penn State ended the streak for Williams finding the back of the net in the 11th minute.  It ended the goal less streak for Williams at 427.03.  Maryland got the golden goal at College Park in the 76th minute.
