Philly Women’s College Soccer Week in Review – September 15th Edition

As non-conference play begins to wind down it was the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel who got through the week undefeated.  Penn won both of their contests while Drexel earned a win and a tie.

Penn did not allow a goal in wins over Bucknell and Loyola.  It was a big week for Emily Sands who had both goals at Bucknell and a score against Loyola.  Sands leads the Red and Blue in goals (4), assists (3), and points (11).  Kitty Qu recorded her third shutout.  Drexel posted a huge victory defeating St. John’s 2 – 1 with the goal coming in the second overtime period by Lauren Currey.  Earlier in the North Jersey / New York road trip the Dragons got a scoreless draw in a driving rain storm at Monmouth.

La Salle split the week playing in two 3 – 2 games.  The Explorers won against Delaware, but lost to Navy in home games.  Amirah Louketis had goals in both games giving her four on the season.

Temple tied 1 – 1 twice during their road trip to Maryland and Rider.  Marisa DiGenova got a goal in the 90th minute to send the Maryland game into extra time.  Hailey Gutkowski had the assist, then scored at Rider.

Villanova took on #6 Florida State on the West Campus.  The Cats were outshot 27 – 5, 13 – 2 on goal in a 5 – 0 loss to the Seminoles. 

It was a tough week for the Hawks who fell at Columbia and Lehigh giving up 2 goals in each game. 

La Salle and Saint Joseph’s open Atlantic 10 play with the Explorers hosting the Colonials of George Washington.  The Hawks travel to Carolina to take on the Davidson Wildcats.

Week of September 9 – 16, 2019

DREXEL 3 – 2 – 2 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 CAA

Results – Tied 0 – 0 (2 OT) vs. Monmouth, Won 2 – 1 (2 OT) at St. John’s

Summary – Lauren Currey scored the golden goal at St. John’s in the 107th minute.  Currey leads the team in scoring with 4 goals, 2 assists, and 11 points.  Libby Baeza posted her first clean slate at Monmouth who had a goal waived off and a shot that hit the crossbar.

Next Game – 9/19 vs. Seton Hall

LA SALLE 4 – 3 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 3 – 2 vs. Delaware, Lost 3 – 2 vs. Navy

Summary – Maci Bower and Amirah Louketis scored goals over the week.  Both players are tied for the team-lead with 4 goals apiece.  Jess Shanahan scored a goal and assisted on another in the Delaware game.  Claudia Jenkins saved 7 shots on goal by the Blue Hens.

Next Game – 9/22 vs. George Washington

PENN – 4 – 1 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Ivy League

ResultsWon 3 – 0 at Bucknell, Won 4 – 0 vs. Loyola

Summary – In addition to three goals by Emily Sands, Penn got scores by Paige Howard, Kelsey Andrews, and Breukelen Woodard.  Kitty Qu saved five at Bucknell.

Next Game – 9/20 vs. Hofstra

SAINT JOSEPH’S  3 – 4 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 2 – 1 at Columbia, Lost 2 – 0 at Lehigh

Summary – Saint Joe’s is on a two-game skid.  At Columbia Kendal Trickey got the ball over the line in the 61st minute, but the Lions would get the game-winner 9 minutes later.  The Mountain Hawks scored twice in the second half to defeat SJU.

Next Game – 9/22 at Davidson

TEMPLE 1 – 3 – 3 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 AAC

Results – Tied 1 – 1 (2 OT) at Maryland, Tied 1 – 1 (2 OT) at Rider

Summary – Hailey Gutkowski recorded a goal and an assist over the week.  At Maryland Morgan Basileo had 10 needed saves.  The Owls were outshot in that game 25 – 14 with an 11 – 4 disadvantage in shots on goal.

Next Game – 9/18 vs. Wagner

VILLANOVA 3 – 3 – 1 Overall, 0

Results – Lost 5 – 0 vs. #6 Florida State

Summary – Hensley Hancuff had a career-high tying 8 saves.

Next Game – 9/19 at Princeton
