Week of September 10 – 17, 2013 Games

Drexel Wins Two Late, Hawks Beat Owls

DREXEL 3 – 2 – 1, 0 – 0 – 0 CAA

Results –              Won 2 – 1 at Lehigh

Won 1 – 0 vs. LaSalle at Vidas Field

Summary –

Drexel 2 Lehigh 1 – Trailing 1 – 0 in the second half the Dragons got goals from Mark Donohue in the 78th minute, and Nathan Page followed in the 81st minute to put Drexel on top.  The victory marked the 100th career win for Coach Doug Hess.  Lehigh’s Danny Gonzalez scored in the 61st minute.  It was the first career-goal given up by Dragons freshman goalkeeper Tyler Afflerbach.

Drexel 1 LaSalle 0 – In dramatic fashion Drexel won its third straight game as Donohue scored on a header to the far post with just 7 seconds remaining in regulation.  Afflerbach recorded 2 saves for his second shutout of the season.  For his efforts the Dragon freshman was named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Rookie of the Week.  Drexel enjoyed a 23 – 6 edge in shots on goal.

Next Game – vs. Rutgers 9/24 at Vidas Field

LA SALLE 1 – 3 – 2, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results –              Tied 0 – 0 at LIU Brooklyn

Won 2 – 1 vs. Saint Peter’s at McCarthy Stadium

Lost 1 – 0 at Drexel.

Summary –

LaSalle 0 LIU Brooklyn 0 (2 OT) – LaSalle goalkeeper John McCarthy made 7 saves recording his first shutout of the season and 24th of his career.  Jason Plumhoff and Kevin Pink led the Explorers in shots with 4 each.  LaSalle had 19 shots in the game while LIU had 17.

LaSalle 2 Saint Peter’s 1 – Plumhoff scored a goal and had an assist in leading the Explorers to the win.   Andrew Lill scored on a header off the foot of Plumhoff in the 50th minute to give LaSalle a lead.  Saint Peter’s scored just over a minute later when Mandee Mandee beat goalkeeper McCarthy inside the left post.  LaSalle got the game winning tally when Plumhoff ripped a low liner to give his team the winning tally.  Joe Farrell got the assist.  Saint Peter’s outshot LaSalle 12 – 11.  McCarthy was credited with 2 saves.

Drexel 1 LaSalle 0 – Dragons Mark Donohue scored with 7 seconds to play to hand LaSalle the loss at Vidas Field.  McCarthy made 6 saves as Drexel took 23 shots in the game compared to 6 for LaSalle.  The Explorers senior from Cinnaminson, NJ was named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Defender of the Week as he had 7 saves and a .900 Save% for the week.

Next Game – at Lehigh 9/21

PENN – 2 – 2 – 0, 0 – 0 – 0 Ivy League

Results

                              Lost 3 – 2 at Cal Poly SLO

Lost 2 – 1 (2 OT) at UC Santa Barbara

Summary –

Cal Poly SLO 3 Penn 2 – Freshman Sam Hayward scored his first career goal getting the ball inside the left post in the 74th minute to give Penn a 2 – 1 lead. But Cal Poly scored twice in just over 6 minutes to get the win.  Matt LaGrassa tied the game in the 81st minute, then Connor Drechsler got the winner off a rebound with 2:42 to play.  Goalkeeper Tyler Kinn recorded 5 saves for the Red and Blue who were outshot 15 – 11 for the game.  Cal Poly had a 14 – 2 edge in corner kicks.

UCSB 2 Penn 1 (2 OT) – Penn concluded its California trip playing an even match against the UCSB Gauchos who would get a goal in transition when Charlie Miller headed the ball inside the right post to win it.  The Quakers had good chances in the extra sessions, but none found the back of the net.  Penn had a 13 – 12 lead in shots while Cal Santa Barbara had the advantage in corner kicks 7 – 6.

Next Game – vs. #19 Georgetown 9/19 at Rhodes Field

SAINT JOSEPH’S 1 – 1 – 3, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Result –

Won 1 – 0 vs. Temple at Sweeney Field

Summary –

Saint Joseph’s 1 Temple 0 – The Hawks handed the Temple Owls their first loss of the season.  Jimmy Reilly scored the goal in the 61st minute as his shot found the right side bottom of the net.  It was the first win of the season for SJU, and was the first win for Coach Don D’Ambra against Soccer Six rival Temple.  Reilly was named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Player of the Week.Jimmy reilly

Next Game – at Siena 9/18

TEMPLE 4 – 2 – 0, 0 – 0 – 0 AAC

Results –

Won 1 – 0 vs. Rider at the Ambler Sports Complex

Lost 1 – 0 at Saint Joseph’s

Lost 2 – 1 at Delaware

Summary –

Temple 1 Rider 0 – A penalty kick by Jared Martinelli in the 74th minute gave the Owls their fourth win of the season against no losses.  Temple outshot Rider 12 – 6 and had an 8 – 2 edge in corner kicks.  The Owls goalkeeper Dan Scheck recorded a shutout making just one save in the game.

Saint Joseph’s 1 Temple 0 – The Owls dropped their first game of the season as Jimmy Reilly scored the only goal of the game in the 61st minute.  Scheck had one save and the goal was the first scored against him this season.  Temple had an 8 – 6 lead in shots on goal.

Delaware 2 Temple 1 – The Owls suffered their second loss in a row losing on the road.  Temple took a 1 – 0 lead on a goal by Chas Wilson in the 13th minute.  Martinelli had the assist.  Delaware struck back a scant 32 seconds later when Mark Garrity tied the score.  Jaime Martinez netted the game win two minutes later.

Next Game – vs. Villanova 9/21 at the Ambler Sports Complex

VILLANOVA 2 – 2 – 1, 0 – 0 – 0 Big East

Results –

Lost 2 – 1 (OT) at Monmouth

Won 1 – 0 at Stony Brook

Summary –

Monmouth 2 Villanova 1 – A goal by Thomas Penfield 37 seconds into the overtime period proved to be the difference as Monmouth earned a victory on overtime.  The Wildcats had a 1 – 0 lead when Oscar Umar scored in the 32nd minute off a header.  Monmouth had a 17 – 6 lead in shots and were up 8 – 5 in corner kicks.

Villanova 1 Stony Brook 0 – Hayden Harr headed a pass from Oscar Umar into the upper right corner of the net for the only goal of the game in the 76th minute.  Goalkeeper Andrew Weakley picked up his second shutout of the season making two saves.
