PHILLY COLLEGE MEN’S SOCCER WEEK IN REVIEW

Saint Joseph’s Remains Unbeaten at Home, Gets Lone City Win

Week of October 17 – 22, 2018

DREXEL 8 – 5 – 3 Overall, 2 – 5 – 1 CAA

Results – Lost 2 – 1 at William & Mary

Summary – The Dragons concluded CAA play with a loss against the Tribe.  Drexel remains tied for 6th place and the final playoff spot with Northeastern.  The Huskies still have two games left on their schedule.  Elon and the College of Charleston are 3 points back with a game to play.  There is still more to be decided for the Dragons immediate future.  Allen Kwesi had 3 shots, 2 on goal, and the Drexel lone goal against William & Mary.

Next Game – 10/24 vs. Saint Joseph’s at Vidas Field

LA SALLE 2 – 10 – 3 Overall, 0 – 4 – 3 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 2 – 0 at Dayton, Tied 1 – 1 (2 OT) at George Washington

Summary – Omari Cotterell scored his first collegiate goal giving the Explorers a lead over the Colonials, but GW scored in the 79th minute to gain a draw.  Freshman goalie Brett Werner made 10 saves in his initial game.  Dayton out shot La Salle 17 – 10, who had 8 in the second half.  None would cross the line.

Next Game – 10/23 at NJIT

PENN – 2 – 4 – 5 Overall, 0 – 3 – 1 Ivy League

ResultsTied 1 – 1 (2 OT) at Yale

Summary – The University of Pennsylvania had a 17 – 8 advantage in shots, 5 – 2 on goal.  But a goal by Jake Kohlbrenner in the 84th minute gave the Quakers a 1 – 1 tie.  Goalie Scott Forbes made 4 saves, all in the overtime periods.  He has a Soccer Six leading 0.89 Goals Against Average.

Next Game – 10/23 at Temple

SAINT JOSEPH’S  8 – 5 – 2 Overall, 2 – 2 – 2 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 4 – 3 at George Mason, Won 3 – 0 vs. St. Bonaventure at Sweeney Field

Summary – The Hawks earned a split of games over the week.  In the win against the Bonnies Leon Marcic scored twice, the first and third goals of the contest.  Marcic posted 5-points over the week in earning the Philadelphia Soccer Six Player of the Week award.  Defender David Grana played every minute of both games and had an assist in the St. Bona game.  He was the Soccer Six Defender of the Week.  Goalie Joseph Boehm posted his 4th shutout of the year.  Ritchie Barry factored in all three goals at Mason getting 2 goals and an assist in Virginia.  Saint Joe’s is tied for 7th place in the A10.  The Hawks remain unbeaten at home.

Next Game – 10/24 at Drexel

TEMPLE 4 – 8 – 3 Overall, 1 – 3 – 1 AAC

Results – Lost 2 – 1 at #13 Connecticut

Summary – Temple freshman Elias Hellgren Villegas scored his first collegiate goal, the lone score for the Owls at Connecticut.  The Huskies got the game winner in controversial fashion.  In the 88th minute Abdou Mbacki lofted a shot over the head of Owls goalie Simon Lefebvre.  The linesman called offsides, but was over ruled after a discussion with the referee.

Next Game – 10/23 vs. Penn at the Temple Sports Complex

VILLANOVA 6 – 7 – 1 Overall, 1 – 5 – 0 Big East

Results – Lost 2 – 1 vs. Butler at the Higgins Soccer Complex

Summary – Butler got the game-winner by Logan Lee with just 49 ticks left on the clock.  Wildcat Zach Zandi got a goal in the 8th minute to open the scoring.  Zandi has a team-best 14 points, 6 goals and 2 assists.  It was the fourth straight loss for Nova who will close the season against the Red Storm on St. John’s in the middle of the week.
