PHILLY COLLEGE WOMEN’S SOCCER WEEK IN REVIEW

Saint Joseph’s Clinches Quarterfinal Home Game, Penn Stays Unbeaten in the Ivy League, Drexel Earns CAA Tournament Berth

Week of October 17 – 23, 2018

DREXEL 7 – 6 – 5 Overall, 4 – 4 – 1 CAA

Results – Won 1 – 0 at Northeastern, Won 2 – 0 vs. Elon at Vidas Field

Summary – The Dragons clinched a berth in the CAA Championships with two wins over the week.  Lauren Currey scored two goals over the final weekend.  Libby Baeza recorded 9 saves at Northeastern.  Drexel will play the College of Charleston in the quarterfinals.  The winner will meet top-seeded James Madison.

Next Game – 10/26 at College of Charleston in the CAA Quarterfinal round

LA SALLE 8 – 8 – 1 Overall, 3 – 7 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 1 – 0 vs. George Mason at McCarthy Stadium, Lost 4 – 2 at VCU

Summary – The season ended for the Explorers.  Camaren Cox scored a career-high 4 points to give her 11 for the season, behind Molly O’Brien (19) and Madison Bower with a team-high 22.  The Explorers held Emma van der Vost of Mason, the conference leader in points to 4 shots, none on goal.  GMU did get the winner in the 84th minute.  The defending Atlantic 10 Champions finished on a four-game losing streak.

Next Game – 2019 Season Opener

PENN – 12 – 1 – 1 Overall, 4 – 0 – 1 Ivy League

ResultsWon 2 – 1 at Yale, Won 6 – 0 vs. Delaware State at Rhodes Field

Summary – Emily Sands scored twice, the game-winner came in the 81st minute in New Haven.  It was her seventh game-winner this year placing Sands second in the nation.  The 4 Ivy wins for the University of Pennsylvania represents their highest win total since 2-13.  Penn is the only unbeaten team in the Ancient Eight.  Stepping out of conference Penn blanked the opponent for the 11th time this season, 2 off the all-time record.  Five different players notched goals for the Red and Blue with Abbey Duncan getting two.  Penn hosts Brown on Saturday, a win and the Quakers will clinch a share of the Ivy League Championship.

SAINT JOSEPH’S  13 – 4 – 2 Overall, 8 – 2 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 1 – 0 (OT) at Fordham, Won 1 – 0 vs. Saint Bonaventure both at Sweeney Field

Summary – Morgan Bower scored 5:29 into the overtime period in the Bronx giving Saint Joseph’s the victory.  The game was a defensive battle that had 5 shots on goal total.  The lone shot for SJU was Bower’s overtime winner.  The Hawks secured a home game in the tournament defeating Saint Bonaventure 1 – 0 on an early goal by Dakota Mills.  Saint Joe’s, who end the season winning 6 games in a row, will have a rematch with Fordham at Sweeney Field in the A10 Tournament.

TEMPLE 7 – 9 – 1 Overall, 3 – 4 – 1 AAC

Results – Won 1 – 0 vs. Tulsa, Lost 1 – 0 vs. #22 Memphis both at the Temple Sports Complex

Summary – The Owls won and lost a one-nil game keeping their streak of one-goal games alive.  Natalie Druehl got her first goal of the season in the 10th minute in the win over the Golden Hurricane.  Against nationally-ranked Memphis an early goal victimized Temple when Clarissa Larisey scored in the 2nd minute.  Morgan Basielo had 5 saves against Tulsa, Jordan Nash saved 8 against the Tigers.

Next Game – 10/25 at Connecticut

VILLANOVA 9 – 8 – 0 Overall, 3 – 5 – 0 Big East

Results – Lost 3 – 2 (OT) at St. John’s, Lost 1 – 0 at DePaul

Summary – The Wildcats were defeated twice in Big East road games.  At St. John’s Christina Ballero scored off a cross in the 99th minute to win for the Red Storm.  DePaul got their game-winner 41 seconds before halftime from Jade Eriksen-Russo.  Shaye Seyffart scored her first goal on Long Island and Chloe O’Neill got her fifth goal in the 60th minute to give the Cats a 2 – 1 lead.  Villanova dropped their last four games.
