Day One featured the men’s competition in the NCAA Track and Field Championships on Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. The Philadelphians had a runner in a final and three in the semifinal round. The University of Pennsylvania had three athletes participating in Day One while one Villanova Wildcat took to the starting line. The season ended for all four.
In the only track final of the day Dylan Throop of the University of Pennsylvania took to the starting line in the Men’s 10000m run. He would place 17th covering the distance in 29:24.03. His best split time was 1:06.95 at the 7200m mark, the fastest time in that segment.
Throop ran in the back of the pack for most of the race, but this was a highly competitive contest. With 3 laps remaining the pack stayed in a bunch. There was no real lead pack and no real chase pack. Throop and others lost contact in the last two laps. In the final lap the winner Ishmael Kipkurui, the collegiate record holder in this event, of New Mexico pulled away along with teammate Habtom Samuel. The last split for Kipkuri was :53.38. In a surprise Liam Murphy of Villanova was eliminated in the Heat phase of the Men’s 1500m. Murphy finished sixth in his heat running a time of 3:55.44. The top five finishers in both preliminaries move on the the final on Friday. The next two fastest times would also qualify. He had to hope the advance on time, but he did not. The final qualifier was Ferenc Kovacs of Harvard who ran the distance in 3:42.31. The fastest qualifying time is 3:41.67 turned in by Adam Spencer of Wisconsin. Jack Crull of Bradley won Heat one that Murphy was a participant. Crull’s time was 3:51.96. None of the heat one runners advanced. Murphy ran most of the race either in front or in the top three. He led after 700 meters, but he was passed by runners both on the inside and outside of him. The split times for Murphy was :49.62 the top opening heat time. He followed that with 1:11.84, :59.88, and :51.13. The Villanova runner still holds the collegiate record time of 3:33.02 in this event ran on March 27, 2025.

Two Penn Hurdlers participated in the Men’s 400m Hurdles. Alex Sadikov ran in Heat 1 and finished 7th getting to the finish line in :52.50. He will not advance to the final as the top two finishers and the next three fastest times will run on Friday. The winner of the heat was Nathaniel Ezekiel who ran a personal best time of :47.86, the fastest qualifying time. In heat 3 Ryan Matulonis ran a time of :49.54 finishing fifth in his semifinal and overall in fifteenth place. Matulonis was in contention at the 200m mark, but could not sustain his pace.
