Big Five Results at NCAA Track & Field Championships – Day Two

Sadie Sigfstead Runs the Fastest NCAA Championship Meet Event Time by a Wildcat in the Women’s 10000m

The second day of the NCAA Championships at Hayward Field featured the women athletes in their first day of competition. Representatives from the University of Pennsylvania and La Salle took to the track, one in a final, the other trying for a race on Saturday.

In the Women’s 10,000m final Villanova Wildcats distance runner Sadie Sigfstead ran a time of 32:40.13 to finish 13th in the 24 runner field. Sigfstead ran well early. Her splits did not go above 1:17 until after the200m mark. She did finish strong to set the program mark in the NCAA Track and Field Championships in this event. The national champion in the event is Pamela Kosgei of New Mexico who took the lead over Grace Hartman of NC State at the 6800m mark then kept the advantage to the finish line. Kosgei set a personal best, a meet record, and collegiate record time of 31:17.82. Hartman turned in a time of 31:32.15. Kosgei had the fastest split 8 times in the race. Sigfstead will have a rematch with Kosgei and Hartman on Saturday in the Women’s 5000m on Saturday.

In the semifinal of the Women’s 300m Steeple La Salle Explorer Gwenno Goode finished in 10th place in her individual heat and 20th overall covering the distance in 10:04.19. The top five in each heat plus the next two fastest times will compete in the final on Saturday. The last qualifying time was 9:43.24. The top overall qualifier is Doris Lemnogle of Alabama who is the meet and collegiate record holder in the event. She ran a 9:10.13 in April of this year. Lemnogle’s time in her heat was 9:26.44.
