Fourth Quarter Scoring Drought Costs Drexel

Drexel Scoreless Span Results in 56 – 52 Loss to Campbell

PHILADELPHIA, PA 3/2/2025 –

Both teams came into the DAC on five-game winning streaks. The only thing for sure was one team would have their streak snapped. That team is the Drexel Dragons who lost 56 – 52 to the Campbell Camels on Senior Day.

“Disappointing to have our final game at home not end with the win,” said Drexel Coach Amy Mallon, “I think it was evident when you’re not scoring those little things, and some of the things we didn’t do well, that put us in a position to every possession mattered.”

A tough loss, but how it happened makes it harder to take for Drexel. The fourth quarter started with the Dragons leading 44 – 40. A three pointer by Drexel guard Cara McCormack at the 8:20 mark gave her team a 49 – 43 lead. It would be the last points the Dragons would score until another three-pointer by Laine McGurk at the buzzer. Eleven consecutive shots were missed. In the final quarter Drexel made 2 of 13 shots (15.4%).

Campbell took the lead on basket from beyond the arc by Camels guard Audrey Fuller with 3:27 to play. That advantage would stretch to seven points. Campbell had a 13 – 0 run.

“There is a lot of off the ball physicality that happens when we run an offense like we do,” Mallon said about the last quarter shooting woes. “I think their pressure picked up. We weren’t getting as many easy looks. And then there is a little fatigue that set in as well. We got good shots. We just missed them.”

What the Numbers Say

Daja Evans was a key contributor for the Dragons. She scored 15 points and had a season-high 13 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. She blocked 5 shots to place her tenth in that category in program history.

Amaris Baker scored a team-high 17 points.

Campbell went to the foul line 19 times making 13. Drexel went to the charity stripe 8 times making 7 foul shots.

The Camels had one player break double digits. Gianni Boone scored 14 points, 12 were scored in a row in the first quarter.

Senior Day

Prior to the game Drexel celebrated the Class of 2025; Chloe Hodges, Amaris Baker, and Cara McCormack.

Up Next

Drexel (16 – 10, 12 – 4) missed a chance to tie for first place in the CAA as league leader North Carolina A&T lost at Elon. The Dragons can still get the top seed in the conference tournament, but need help. They have cemented the second seed. Between there are two more regular season games on the road at Delaware and Stony Brook. It will be the last time the Dragons and the Blue Hens meet as conference rivals.

“We have a lot left this season, two more games after this,” said Mallon. “We have to reset quickly and focus on what our next step is. We have to learn from this and grow as we head into our final two games of the season.”
