A Big Day for The Big Five

Drexel is Officially a Member of the Women’s Big Five

VILLANOVA, PA. 6/6/2024 –

Yes, it is a big day for the Big Five.

At a media event at Villanova University the Drexel Dragons became an official member of the women’s Big Five. The women’s teams will compete in the pod format that the Big Five men adopted a season ago. The championship will be decided as the pod winners will meet in the Big Five Classic tripleheader at the Finneran Pavilion on December 6, 2024.

The announcement was made by Dan Hilferty who is now the Ambassador of the Big Five. He was named as part of the new leadership team. Hilferty is an alumnus of Saint Joseph’s University and serves as the Chairman and CEO of Comcast Spectacor. He also serves as the Governor of the Philadelphia Flyers. He stated that the name Big Five will remain, and it will have six members. Additionally, the men’s championship format will remain in place as it did last season, and the Wells Fargo Center will be the site of the championship tripleheader for the next three seasons. The Men’s Classic will take place on December 7, 2024.

The Women’s Big Five will be the same as the Men’s Big Five format adopted last season. The schools will be separated into two three-team pods. Pod 1 will be La Salle, Temple, and Drexel. Pod 2 will be made up of Saint Joseph’s, Villanova, and Penn. The pods have a round robin format with games played at campus sites. The first place teams in each pod will meet to decide the Big Five title. The second place teams play, and the third place teams face off against one another as part of the Tripleheader on December 6 at Villanova.

After the 2024 Big Five Classic the men and women pods will remain synchronized and rotate every two years. The Women’s Big Five Classic site will change on a yearly basis. Those sites will be named at a later date.

The teams can play one another outside of pod seeding crossover during the season, but not as a Big Five game. La Salle and Saint Joseph’s play each other twice per season as part of the Atlantic 10. Mel Greenberg reported in The Guru Report that Temple and Saint Joseph’s scheduled a potential second game, a strength of schedule game outside of the format.

Previous Big Five to New Big Five

Saint Joseph’s Coach Cindy Griffin spoke and rang a cow bell and threw streamers to illustrate the desire to retain Big Five traditions. Something she grew up doing.

Change is inevitable. So today is to celebrate Philadelphia basketball, the Big Five, and women’s collegiate basketball. And a day for the coaches to focus on something other than the transfer portal.
