Wildcats End the Season 17 – 7, Delaware to WNIT Final Four

This may not have been an official Battle of the Blue, but was just as intense as a trip to Memphis and a berth in the WNIT Final Four was on the line. In a scrappy game from beginning to the end the Delaware Blue Hens earn a 77 – 70 win over the Villanova Wildcats. Coach Denise Dillon finishes her first year as Villanova Coach with a 17 – 7 record.
Each quarter saw no larger than a two-point lead at the end of ten minutes. Villanova led after the first two quarters, Delaware at the end of the third by a 52 – 50 margin. The last ten minutes would decide the outcome.
With just over five and a half minutes to play the Blue Hens held a 59 – 58 lead. The momentum of the game would shift in their direction behind a 13 – 4 run started by Ty Battle and Jasmine Dickey, who scored a game-high tying 22 points. Tyi Skinner concluded the decisive run with 5 of her career-high tying 22 points. Battle added 17 points in the contest
Villanova could not consistently score a basket and lost Maddy Siegrist at the 3:30 mark on an offensive foul, her fifth of the game. Still, the Wildcats tried to battle back and did so at the foul line. making 10 consecutive to the end. But, the Wildcats made 3 of 14 field goal attempts in the fourth quarter, two by Brooke Mullin, the other by Sarah Mortensen.
Four Wildcats scored in double figures with Brianna Herlihy and Siegrist getting 15 points each. Both players had 7 rebounds. Siegrist did not score in the fourth quarter. Mortensen and Bella Runyan contributed 12 points each. Runyan converted 9 of 12 from the line, 8 of 10 in the last ten minutes. Lior Garzon scored 10 points all before halftime.
Delaware (24 – 4) continues to play in the WNIT Championships for the third time. The next game for the Charlotte Regional winner will be in Memphis against an opponent to be determined.
