Philly Men’s Soccer D1 Recap – Week of September 19 – 25

September 26, 2022 –

Two Wins for Drexel, the Conference win behind Harrison Coron, Penn and Villanova Win By Shutout

A good week for the city schools as five of the six teams won at least one game. The Drexel Dragons had the best week of all winning twice by a composite score of 8 – 0. Drexel beat Columbia, then got a conference victory against the College of Charleston. It was a record day for Harrison Coron who scored a career-high 4 goals in South Carolina. His four goals and eight points in a single game tied the conference records….The University of Pennsylvania is on a four-game winning streak, the first time since 2010. The Red and Blue went to DePaul and came home with a 3 – 0 win behind the scoring punch of Michael Hewes and Ben Stitz…The Villanova Wildcats scored three goals in 19 minutes in the 4 – 0 Big East win over St. John’s. Gray Ricca got his goal in the 24th minute, Lyam MacKinnon in minute 31, and Viktor Benediktsson netted his goal in the 41st minute….The La Salle Explorers and Saint Joseph’s Hawks won one game over the week. La Salle got theirs against Saint Joe’s when Nigel Buckley scored in the 75th minute in the 2 – 1 win. That goal came two minutes after Andres Rodriguez scored the tying goal….The Saint Joseph’s Hawks won 2 – 1 over UMBC prior to the city game. Blake Driehuis scored his first goal in the 85th minute for the game-winner. Chris Hunt started the scoring for the Hawks in the La Salle game 19 seconds into the match….The Temple Owls lost their second game in the American falling 2 – 1 at USF. Sean Karani scored at the 20:46 mark gave the Owls a lead that lasted for 68:23. Then the Bulls went on to net two goals for the win.

The upcoming week sees Saint Joseph’s and Villanova play non-conference games. Saint Joe’s hosts Monmouth while Penn State visits Villanova. In league games La Salle plays a home match with Saint Bonaventure. Drexel goes to Elon. Temple meets SMU in Texas. Penn opens the Ivy League portion of their schedule at Yale.

Games of September 19 – 25, 2022

DREXEL 4 – 2 – 3 Overall, 2 – 1 – 1 CAA

Results – Won 3 – 0 vs. Columbia, Won 5 – 0 vs. College of Charleston

Summary – The Dragons recorded two shutouts. In the non-conference game against Columbia Antonio Illuminato registered a goal and an assist. Other Dragons who found the back of the net over the week were Joshua Pulla, Daniel Nessler, and Dominick Bachstein. Drexel has scored 22 goals this season, the highest number in the CAA. Elon is second with 15, and these two teams play on Saturday.

Next Game – October 1 at Elon

LA SALLE 2 – 5 – 2 Overall, 1 – 1 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 2 – 0 at Monmouth, Won 2 – 1 at Saint Joseph’s

Summary – Monmouth had a 12 – 4 edge in shots in the second half that resulted in both goals. La Salle got their first Atlantic 10 win over Saint Joe’s. The Explorers are 1 – 4 – 2 over their last seven games.

Next Game – October 1 vs. Saint Bonaventure at McCarthy Stadium

PENN – 5 – 1 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Ivy League       

Results– Won 3 – 0 at DePaul

Summary – Stitz registered two goals in Chicago, Hewes had one. Both players have a team-high 5 goals. Goalie Nick Christoffersen had his first official clean slate. Over the seven games the Quakers are outscoring the opposition 18 – 2.

Next Game – October 1 at Yale

SAINT JOSEPH’S  1 – 3 – 4 Overall, 0 – 1 – 1 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 2 – 1 vs. UMBC, Lost 2 – 1 vs. La Salle

Summary – Truls Braendvang tied the game against UMBC scoring in the 68th minute.  The Hawks experienced two 2 – 1 game scores, one a win, one a loss. The Hawks look for Atlantic 10 number one.

Next Game – September 27 vs. Monmouth at Sweeney Field

TEMPLE 2 – 4 – 2 Overall, 0 – 2 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 2 – 1 at USF

Summary – The Owls are looking for the first conference win. USF had a 19 – 6 edge in shots, 6 – 3 in shots on goal.

Next Game – September 30 at SMU

VILLANOVA 3 – 2 – 2 Overall, 1 – 0 – 1 Big East

Results – Won 4 – 0 at St. John’s

Summary – Vincent Petrera scored in the 75th minute to round out the scoring in New York. It is Big East win number one for the Wildcats.

Next Game – September 28 vs. Penn State at The Higgins Soccer Complex
