Second Half Comeback Propels Temple Past USF, Villanova Wins Another Battle of the Blue

TEMPLE – Overall 7 – 4, 6 – 1 American Athletic Conference
Result – Won 27 – 17 vs. USF at the Linc
Summary – The Temple Owls began a stretch of four games last month against teams that were undefeated in the American. Temple won three of those four games that concluded with a win over the USF Bulls. The Owls were behind 17 – 0 at halftime. The defense rose up in the second half forcing 5 turnovers. Temple took the lead on a 73-yard punt return by the American Offensive Player of the Week Isaiah Wright. It gave the Owls as 20 – 17 lead. The Cherry and White finished it when defensive lineman Dan Levine sacked USF quarterback Blake Barnett at the 7 yard line. Barnett fumbled the ball which was recovered by Owls linebacker Chapelle Russell in the endzone for a touchdown with 1:37 lef to play. Temple wide receiver Ventell Bryant caught 4 passes to set the program record for most career receptions, now with 168.

VILLANOVA – Overall 5 – 6, 2 – 6 CAA
Result – Won 42 – 21 at Delaware
Summary – The Wildcats won their seventh consecutive game over the Blue Hens in the Battle of the Blue. Running back Aaron Forbes ran for 138-yards and set a career-mark with 3 touchdowns. Linebacker Drew Wiley recorded 8 tackles, 2 sacks, an interception, forced a fumble and recovered one in the victory. Quarterback Zach Bednarczyk threw for 269 yards and had a scoring toss to tight end Ryan Bell that gave Villanova a two-score lead in the fourth quarter. Bednarczyk also ran for a touchdown. The Wildcats amassed 459 yards of offense, 190 on the ground. Wide receiver Jarrett McClenton hauled in an 81-yard reception, the fifth-longest catch in program history. The defense sacked the UD quarterback seven times and forced four turnovers, 2 fumbles and 2 interceptions. Villanova ended the season winning two of their last three games.

PENN – Overall 6 – 4, Ivy League 3 – 4
Result – Lost 42 – 14 at #9/11 Princeton
Summary – The University of Pennsylvania ended the season with a 6 – 4 record giving Coach Ray Priore a winning record in each if his four seasons. The win gave Princeton a 10 – 0 record and the outright Ivy League title. Penn scored twice in the minute and a half before halftime and the same span after intermission to pull to within 21 – 14. However, the Tigers closed out the game with 3 unanswered touchdowns. The Tigers had 579 yards of total offense, 296 on the ground. John Lovett ran for 123 yards and threw for 255 yards while receiver Jesper Horsted caught 8 passes for 165 yards and 3 touchdowns. Penn was led by Steve Farrell with 8 receptions for 75 yards. Tyler Herrick and Christian Pearson crossed the line for the Red and Blue.
