Philly College Football Week In Review – October 19th Edition

Temple and Penn Defeated on the Road

It as a tough week for city schools Temple and the University of Pennsylvania each falling by a large margin.  Villanova had the week off.

Temple faced a nationally ranked team for the third time this year.  The Owls won against Maryland and Memphis and looked for the hat trick at SMU.  It was not meant to be.  The Cherry and White, ranked # 25, could not get it going on offense, and the defense did not have an answer for the Mustangs offense.  This was the first conference loss for Owls. SMU gained 198 yards on the ground and 457 through the air, led by quarterback Shane Buechele who completed 30 of 53 passes for 6 touchdowns, which tied a program record.  Wide Receiver Reggie Roberson, Jr. caught 8 of those passes for 250 yards and 3 scores for the Ponies.  Temple totaled just 63 yards rushing led by Re’Mahn Davis with 54 yards and crossed the goal line once.  Quarterback Anthony Russo as 18 of 32 for 171 yards including one scoring toss to Branden Mack.

Penn was defeated at Columbia, the second consecutive time they came up on the short end of the score in Upper Manhattan.  That had not happened since 1979 and 1981.  The defeat was the fourth straight in the Ivy League for Penn.  The Lions led 17 – 0 at halftime and throttled the Quaker offense all day.  Karekin Brooks was held to 60 rushing yards and as a team Penn netted 93 on the ground, his lowest of the year.  The only score for the Red and Blue was by the defense when Conor O’Brien scooped up a fumble and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown with 5:48 to play. Columbia gained 453 total yards for the game.  Lions quarterback Ty Lambert ran for 95 yards and completed 14 of 20 passes for 158 yards including 2 scoring tosses.

Tough to win when the locals had their lowest total points scored and gave up a season high in points against.

Villanova returns to action nest week hosting Stony Brook.  Temple hosts UCF at the Linc with kickoff scheduled for 7 PM.  Penn goes on the road to meet Yale.
