PHILLY COLLEGE MEN’S SOCCER WEEK IN REVIEW

    Drexel Unbeaten, Penn and Villanova With One Loss, Multiple Victories for All Schools

Week of September 3 – 9, 2018

DREXEL 4 – 0 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 CAA

Results – Tied 0 – 0 (2 OT) at Penn, Won 2 – 1 vs. NJIT at The Vidas Athletic Complex

Summary – The Dragons remained unbeaten.  They were tied by neighbor Penn, but it was the first point scored by Drexel on the road against their 33rd Street rival since 2012.  Mathias Ebbesen had 3 shots on goal at Penn, then converted twice against NJIT, giving him 9 points for the year.  It was his first multi-goal game as a Dragon, and earned the midfielder from Oslo, Norway the Philadelphia Soccer Six Player of the Week. Drexel matched their best start under coach Doug Hess.

Next Game – 9/15 vs. James Madison at The Vidas Athletic Complex

LA SALLE 2 – 2 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 2 – 0 vs. St. Francis Brooklyn, Lost 1 – 0 vs. Rider at McCarthy Stadium

Summary – The Explorers suffered their first losses of the year.  St. Francis scores two first half goals.  At Rider the winner was netted in the 87th minute.  La Salle got one shot on goal at the rainy Rider field.

Next Game – 9/12 at Lafayette

PENN – 2 – 1 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Ivy League

ResultsTied 0 – 0 (2 OT) at Drexel, Won 1 – 0 at Marquette, Lost 2 – 0 at Milwaukee

Summary – The Battle of 33rd Street saw no winner and no goals.  After the draw with Drexel the University of Pennsylvania took to the road.  In Wisconsin Penn saw their first loss.  Alex Touche scored off a header that proved to be the game winner at Marquette where goalie Scott Forbes posted his second consecutive shutout.  It was the best start for Penn since 2008.  But the streak would end at Milwaukee.

Next Game – 9/15 at Lehigh

SAINT JOSEPH’S  3 – 2 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 2 – 1 at Stony Brook, Won 4 – 1 at Sacred Heart

Summary – The Hawks fell victim to a goal in the 87th minute at Stony Brook.  Goalie Joseph Boehm recorded a season-high 7 saves.  Saint Joe’s returned home and posted their first-ever win against Sacred Heart.  SJU matches their win total from 2017.  Leon Marcic scored in each game giving him 3 goals this season.

Next Game – 9/11 vs. Navy at Sweeney Field

TEMPLE 2 – 3 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 AAC

Results – Won 1 – 0 (OT) at Rider, Lost 1 – 0 (OT) at St. John’s

Summary – The Owls split a pair of one-nil decisions in overtime.  In the win at Rider the golden goal came in the 94th minute scored by Jalen Campbell who was the Soccer Six Rookie of the Week.  Ironic since Temple lost to Rider 1 – 0 last season on a goal in the 94th minute.  The St. John’s game ended in the 99th minute.  Owls goalie Simon Lefebvre has a .72 goals against average, second best behind Stephen Kopsachilis of Drexel who stands a .31 per game.

Next Game – 9/12 at Princeton

#15/18 VILLANOVA 4 – 1 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Big East

Results – Lost 2 – 0 at Clemson, Won 2 – 1 vs. Penn State at the Higgins Soccer Complex

Summary – The Wildcats expected to meet Penn State on Friday at Talen Energy Stadium in Chester, but severe weather forced a one-day postponement.  Villanova played Penn State on their home campus and came away with a 2 – 1 win.  Zach Zandi scored and has a Soccer Six leading 10 points for the year.  Conor Bradley netted the game-winner and earned the Philadelphia Soccer Six Defender of the Week award.  The win was a bounce-back effort as the Cats lost for the first time this year dropping a 2 – 0 decision at Clemson.  Goalie Carson Williams made 11 saves in the contest where Nova was outshot 24-6.  The loss snapped a three-game Villanova winning streak.
