 Penn Wins Twice and Gets 1st Ivy Victory of the Season, La Salle Picks Up Initial A10 Victory, Saint Joseph’s Wins in Conference and Ties a Non-Conference Game

The University of Pennsylvania Quakers won two games in the three-game homestand. In a city game and a Battle of 33rd Street Penn beat Drexel 2 – 1. Goalie Dane Jacomen made a career-high 11 saves. In the 2 – 1 win against Dartmouth goalie Nick Christoffersen posted his career-high with 8 stops. Penn gets their first Ivy League win. The Saint Joseph’s Hawks also played in and out of conference. Saint Joe’s and Lafayette battled to a 3-all double overtime draw in Easton. Returning home and the A10 the Hawks won 3 – 1 over the Duquesne Dukes on Hawk Hill. SJU scored 6 goals over the week headed by Garrett Lyons with a score in each game. The opposition got the first goal in each game each time, all answered by the Hawks. Lafayette scored the last two to tie. Saint Joe’s got three unanswered to beat Duquesne. The Hawks are 4 – 2 – 0 in the Atlantic 10. Saint Joseph’s remains tied for second place in the league with Rhode Island and VCU. The La Salle Explorers had a game cancelled against Howard. La Salle picked up a 1 – 0 conference win over Saint Bonaventure when Omari Cotterell scored in the 78th minute. This is the first league win for the Explorers, and snapped a three-game losing streak. The Temple Owls had one game on the schedule going to Tulsa to play the #8 Golden Hurricane. It was a defensive battle that Tulsa won 2 – 1. Spencer Patton scored his first goal for the Owls that tied the game. Tulsa won it in the 60th minute. The Villanova Wildcats are in the midst of a three-game skid in the Big East. Villanova lost twice this week. Creighton came to the Higgins Soccer Complex and won 4 – 2. Nova gave up a season-high tying four goals in that game. The Wildcats went on the road afterward to #1 Georgetown and were beaten 3 – 1. Lyam MacKinnon got the initial goal in DC in the 6th minute. The Hoyas got the next three. The Drexel Dragons gave up 2 goals in their two games, but could not overcome the opponent’s output. Drexel lost 2 – 1 at Penn and 2 – 0 at William & Mary. Chris Donovan scored the only goal for the Dragons that gave them a lead at Penn.

Two games have a short bus ride. In a city game Atlantic 10 battle La Salle hosts Saint Joseph’s. Also, in the city Temple goes to University City to play Penn. Villanova is home to play DePaul. Coming to town is NJIT to play Drexel in a non-conference game.

Games of October 11 – October 17, 2021

DREXEL 5 – 6 – 1 Overall, 2 – 2 – 1 CAA

Results – Lost 2 – 1 at Penn, Lost 2 – 0 at William & Mary

Summary – The Dragons held a 1 – 0 lead against the Quakers. But Penn answered with goals in the 61st and 65th minute to secure the victory. Donovan got the only 2 shots on goal in Virginia. Drexel is on a three-game losing streak.

Next Game – October 19 vs. NJIT at Vidas Field

LA SALLE 4 – 8 – 0 Overall, 1 – 4 – 0 Atlantic 10                                                                                                                                       

Results – Won 1 – 0 at Saint Bonaventure

Summary – Mitch Foster tied his season-high with 3 saves in the shutout over the Bonnies. La Salle had a 6 – 3 edge in shots on goal.

Next Game – October 20 vs. Saint Joseph’s at McCarthy Stadium

PENN – 6 – 3 – 2 Overall, 1 – 1 – 1 Ivy League      

Results– Won 2 – 1 vs. Drexel, Won 2 – 1 (2 OT) vs. Dartmouth

Summary – In the Drexel game Joey Bhangdia and Matt Leigh scored within three and a half minutes of one another to get the victory. Bhangdia scored the game winning goal. Hosting the Big Green the Red and Blue scored the game winner in the 104th minute from Stas Korzeniowski. Leo Burney scored his third goal of the campaign. Each game was a come from behind victory.

Next Game – October 19 vs. Temple at Rhodes Field

SAINT JOSEPH’S  6 – 8 – 1 Overall, 4 – 2 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Tied 3 – 3 (2 OT) at Lafayette, Won 3 – 1 vs. Duquesne

Summary – SJU got three straight goals at Lafayette scored by Max Ippolito, Alex Hartmann, and Garrett Lyons. After Duquesne took the lead Saint Joe’s answered with three consecutive scores by Blake Driehaus, Lyons, and Omry Perel. Lyons leads the team with 4 goals. The Hawks are on a two-game winning streak in conference.

Next Game – October 20 at La Salle

TEMPLE 2 – 7 – 2 Overall, 0 – 6 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 2 – 1 at #8 Tulsa

Summary – The Owls were outshot by a 15- 4 margin and 8 – 3 in shots on goal.

Next Game – October 19 at Penn

VILLANOVA 8– 5 – 0 Overall, 4 – 3 – 0 Big East

Results – Lost 4 – 2 vs. Creighton, Lost 3 – 1 at #1 Georgetown

Summary – All goals in the game against the Blue Jays were scored in the second half. The Cats tied the game on a penalty kick by MacKinnon and a goal by Jack Bonas. Creighton won it with two goals 6:28 apart late in the second half. The Hoyas had a huge shot advantage getting 28, 10 of which were on goal. The Wildcats had 8, and 2 required a save.
