Drexel Wins Regular Season CAA Title, La Salle and Saint Joseph’s Go To The Atlantic 10 Tournament, Penn Plays For The Ivy League Title

DREXEL 8 – 7 – 3 Overall, 4 – 1 – 2 CAA
Results – Won 2 – 1 at College of Charleston
Summary –

Drexel 2 College of Charleston 1 – With the victory the Drexel Dragons won the CAA Regular season title for the second straight season and will host the CAA Tournament at Vidas Field. Winning the tournament merits an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Drexel got goals from Jared Girard and Guido Pena in the 42nd and 55th minute of the contest. Goal Keeper Tyler Afflerbach came close to a shutout, but a ball got by him in the 87th minute, Afflerbach posted an 8 – 5 – 2 record this season. Afflerbach was named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Rookie of the Week.

LA SALLE 8 – 7 – 3 Overall, 5 – 2 – 1 Atlantic 10
Results – Won 2 – 0 at Fordham, Won 1 – 0 at George Washington
Summary –
La Salle 2 Fordham 0 – A pair of goals by Jason Plumhoff less than a minute apart was all the Explorers needed to secure the victory. The goals broke a scoreless tie in the 86th and 87th minute. Goal Keeper John McCarthy got the 4th shutout this season, making 9 saves. Plumhoff was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year.
La Salle 1 George Washington 0 – Joe Farrell got the only goal in the 16th minute as McCarthy notched his 27th career shutout, fifth shutout of the season, recording 8 saves.. McCarthy was named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Co-Defender of the Week, and earned All-Atlantic 10 First Team status.
La Salle is the 4th seed in the tournament and travel to Dayton for the match.

PENN – 7 – 8 – 1 Overall, 4 – 1 – 1 Ivy League
Results – Won 2 – 1 vs. Princeton at Rhodes Field
Summary –
Penn 2 Princeton 1 – It was a busy day in West Philadelphia. The Red and Blue soccer squad posted a 2 – 1 win over arch-rival Princeton to set up a winner take all match with Harvard for the Ivy Title. Matt Poplawski evened the score just before halftime. Sam Hayward scored the game-winner in the 61st minute beating the Princeton goal keeper to the right post. Penn will look to take their eighth Ivy Championship on Saturday.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 5 –8 – 5 Overall, 3 – 5 – 0 Atlantic 10
Results – Won 3 – 1 at George Washington, Won 1 – 0 at Fordham
Summary –
Saint Joseph’s 3 George Washington 1 – The Hawks got a goal early from Jimmy Reilly in the 7th minute to get ahead. Alex Critzos netted the second goal in the 51st minute, and then assisted on a goal by Mike Glazer to give SJU a 3 – 0 lead. GW scored in the 89th minute. The Hawks had a 9 – 7 edge in shots.
Saint Joseph’s 1 Fordham 0 – Tim Lazorko scored in the 23rd minute that lifted the Hawks to the win and qualified for the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Goal Keeper Andrew D’Ottavi recorded his 6th shutout of the season, and had a huge save in the 87th minute to deny Fordham the equalizer. Saint Joe’s heads to Dayton for their first Atlantic 10 tournament game since 1994.

TEMPLE 10 – 4 – 4 Overall, 3 – 1 – 4 AAC
Results – Lost 1 – 0 vs. South Florida at the Ambler Sports Complex in the AAC Tournament
Summary –
South Florida 1 Temple 0 – The Owls season may have ended with a 1 – 0 loss in the AAC Quarterfinal round. Stivin Salinas beat Temple goal keeper Dan Scheck with 30 seconds left in the first half to score the only goal of the game. Scheck made 4 saves for the Owls. Temple awaits a potential at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

VILLANOVA 8 – 9 – 1 Overall, 3 – 6 – 0 Big East
Results – Lost 1 – 0 at #8 Georgetown
Summary –
Georgetown 1 Villanova 0 – The Wildcats had to win or face elimination from the Big East Tournament. They did not dropping a 1 – 0 decision in Washington. The only goal came off the foot of Brandon Allen at the 21:18 mark. Villanova came close but never got the equalizer. The Hoyas outshot the Wildcats 13 – 8.
