Drexel Holds On To First Place In The CAA, Temple Hosts A League Tournament Game

Week of October 29 – November 5, 2013 Games

DREXEL 7 – 7 – 3 Overall, 3 – 1 – 2 CAA

Results – Tied 1 – 1 (2 OT) vs. Hofstra at Vidas Athletic Conference

Summary –

Drexel 1 Hofstra 1 – his fourth career goal was a big one.  Tal Bublil scored in the 89th minute tie the game and allowed Drexel to clinch a spot in the CAA Championships.  Despite out shooting Hofstra 7 – 3 in the overtime the Dragons could not get the game winner.  Goal keeper Tyler Afflerbach made 3 saves and was named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Rookie of the week.  Drexel is alone in first place in the conference, one point ahead of Northeastern and two points in front of William & Mary, UNCW, and Delaware.  The Dragons have tie-breaker advantages over those squads.

Results – Lost 3 – 2 (2 OT) vs. Dayton at McCarthy Stadium

Summary –

Dayton 3 LaSalle 2 – The Explorers got out to an early 2 – 0 lead in the first half on goals by Jason Plumhoff, the Philadelphia Soccer Six Co-Offensive Player of the Week, and Joe Farrell.  The Flyers fought back getting goals in the 41st and 55th minute to tie the contest.  Andres Acevedo netted the game-winner off a header for Dayton in the 106th minute.  Dayton outshot LaSalle 20 – 5, 7 – 0 in the overtime.

Next Game – 11/8 at Fordham

PENN – 6 – 8 – 1 Overall, 3 – 0 – 1 Ivy League

ResultsLost 2 – 1 (2 OT) at Brown

Summary –

Brown 2 Penn 1 – The Red and Blue fought back from a 1 – 0 deficit by out shooting the Bears over the final 59 minutes.  The rally was capped by a Duke Lacroix goal to even the score in the 78th minute, but in the 105th minute Daniel Taylor won it for Brown.  Penn and Princeton remain tied for the top spot in the Ivy League with 10 points each.  They will meet on Saturday at Rhodes Field.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 3 –8 – 5 Overall, 1 – 5 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 4 – 1 at Saint Louis

Summary –

Saint Louis 4 Saint Joseph’1 – Freshman Eric Jordan scored the second goal of his career in the 35th minute.  That’s all the Hawks would get in the 4 – 1 loss.  The Billikens dominated SJU leading 11 – 6 in shots, 7 – 2 in shots on goal, and 8 – 0 in corner kicks.  Goal keeper Andrew D’Ottavi made 3 saves for Saint Joe’s.

Next Game – 11/8 at George Washington

TEMPLE 10 – 3 – 4 Overall, 3 – 1 – 4 AAC

Results – Won 1 – 0 (2 OT) vs. Cincinnati at the Ambler Sports Complex

Summary –

Temple 1 Cincinnati 0 – The Owls ended the regular season with a 1 – 0 double overtime victory.  Less than 30 seconds into the overtime seniors Ryan Bradbury and Vaughn Spurrier celebrated Senior Day by teaming up to end their regular season in style.  Bradbury assisted on the Spurrier goal, his fourth of the season.  Goal keeper Dan Scheck had 4 saves in recording his 9th shutout of the season.  Spurrier was named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Co-Offensive Player of the Week, and Scheck was named the Soccer Six Defender of the Week.

VILLANOVA 8 – 8 – 1 Overall, 3 – 5 – 0 Big East

Results – Lost 1 – 0 vs. Xavier at the West Campus Soccer Complex

Summary –

Xavier 1 Villanova 0 – It was a game that could have great meaning in determining who goes to the Big East Tournament.  Xavier got a transition goal from Matt Walker at the 86:57 mark to snap a scoreless deadlock to give Xavier the 1 – 0 victory.  Villanova had a 14 – 6 edge in shots.  The Wildcats fiercely tried to get the equalizer getting 4 corner kicks near the end of the game, but did not capitalize.

Next Game – 11/8 at Georgetown
