Temple Nationally Ranked, Sanchez Scores 4 Goals In Week Action, La Salle Takes Down #25 UMBC

Week of September 15 – September 22, 2015

DREXEL 1 – 6 – 1 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 CAA

Results – Won 1 – 0 vs. Penn at Vidas Field, Lost 3 – 1 at #18 Elon , Tied 0 – 0 (2OT) vs. Saint Joseph’s at Vidas Field

Summary –  The Dragons got their first win of the season on a goal by Colin McGlynn assisted by Francisco Palma in the 63rd minute defeating neighborhood rival Quakers of Penn.  The goal was assisted by Francisco Rodrigues da Palma who won the Soccer Six Rookie of the Week award.  However, they could not keep the momentum going as they drop the conference opener at #18 Elon.  Aaron Thompson scored the lone Drexel goal.  The Soccer Six portion their schedule completed with a scoreless draw against Saint Joseph’s.

Next Game – 9/26 at James Madison

LA SALLE 4 – 3 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 2 – 1 at Rider, Won 1 – 0 at #25 at UMBC

Summary – The Explorers recorded wins on the road against Rider and at nationally ranked UMBC.  Joe Hansen recorded the only goal in the 69th minute at UMBC.  Hansen also scored a goal against the Broncos.  Goal Keeper Mike Kirk recorded his third shutout of the season against UMBC, the most among Soccer Six keepers.  He was named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Defensive Player of the Week.

PENN – 0 – 4 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Ivy League

ResultsLost 1 – 0 at Drexel, Lost 3 – 0 vs. #23 Temple at Rhodes Field

Summary – Penn is still looking for their first win of the season.  The Red and Blue was shutout twice during the week in Soccer Six action against Drexel and Temple.  The Quakers hope that lessons learned will pay off in their upcoming game against Penn State.  It will be the second nationally ranked opponent that Penn will face this season.

Next Game – 9/23 vs. #13 Penn State at Rhodes Field

SAINT JOSEPH’S 1 – 6 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 2 – 0 at St. Francis Brooklyn, Lost  1 – 0 (OT) at Navy, Tied 0 – 0 (2OT) at Drexel

Summary – The Hawks could not score in their three game road swing this week.  SJU gave up an overtime goal in the 69th minute at Navy.  The Hawks were outshot by a 56 – 28 margin.  Hawks goal keeper Bobby Edwards recorded a career-best 6 saves in each of the games.

Next Game – 9/25 vs. Howard at Sweeney Field

Results – Won 2 – 1 at Villanova, Won 3 – 0 at Penn

Summary – The Owls, ranked for the first time in 18 years, picked up wins against city rivals.  It was a big week for Jorge Gomez Sanchez, the Soccer Six Player of the Week for the second straight week, who scored 4 goals.  He had the game-winner at the 88:47 mark at Villanova, and followed that by scoring all three goals at Penn.  Sanchez has 10 goals and scored 22 points this season which leads the American Athletic Conference.  Temple can clinch a share of the Soccer Six crown with a win at La Salle.

Next Game – 9/23 at La Salle

VILLANOVA 4 – 2 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Big East

Results – Lost 2 – 1 vs. #23 Temple, Won 2 – 1 vs. Stony Brook both at the Higgins Soccer Complex

Summary – Games for the Wildcats went down to the last minutes.  They were downed by Temple on a goal in the 89th minute.  However, Villanova got a break winning on an own-goal by Stony Brook with 44 seconds left to play.  Goal keeper Will Steiner recorded 7 saves in that game.  The Wildcats open league play in their next contest at Butler.
