Hollie Mershon set a career mark against Northeastern scoring 33 points, and in made field goals with 12. It was the first time a Dragon player scored more than 30 points since Kamile Nacickaite put up 33 against Akron on November 19, 2011. Mershon led the Dragons in scoring with 17 points and 7 assists. For the week the senior guard averaged 25 points and 7.5 assists.

Shanel Harrison scored a career-high 29 points in the LaSalle win over Temple. It was the first Big Five win for the Explorers, and snapped a losing streak for her team against the Owls.

LA SALLE 6 – 13 Overall, 2 – 2 Atlantic 10, 1 – 2 Big Five

Results – Won 71 – 55 at Temple

Summary –

LaSalle 71 Temple 55 – LaSalle snapped a losing streak against Temple that began in the year 2000. Turnovers were the key as the Owls committed 27 leading to a 28 – 8 advantage for the Explorers in Points Off Turnovers. LaSalle led 49 – 33 with 11:27 to play on a layup by Shanel Harrison. The double-digit deficit held until Temple narrowed the gap to single digits at 61 – 53 with 2:12 to play, but would get no closer. The Owls out-rebounded the Explorers 45 – 28 but had only a 13 – 10 advantage in 2nd Chance Points. LaSalle made 26 of 59 shots for 44.1%. Temple was 20 – 58 for 34.5%. Shanel Harrison scored a career-high 29 points. Ebonee Jones added 21 points and took down 8 rebounds. Jordan Mosley scored 11 points.

PENN – 7 – 8 Overall, 0 – 1 Ivy League, 1 – 3 Big Five

Results – Lost 59 – 51 vs. Temple at the Palestra

Summary –

Temple 59 Penn 51 – Temple took a lead early in the second half as a 29 – 4 run over the halves put the Owls in control by a 36 – 18 score. The lead would grow to 51 – 27 before Penn mounted a comeback that closed the gap to 8 points at the end. The Quakers used an 18 – 4 run to get back into the game. Alyssa Baron led Penn with 12 points. Kara Bonenberger scored 11 points and took down a team-high 5 rebounds.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 13 –5 Overall, 4 – 0 Atlantic 10, 1 – 1 Big Five

Results – Won 61 – 44 vs. Saint Bonaventure at the Hagan Arena

Summary –

Saint Joseph’s 61 Saint Bonaventure 44 – The Hawks got a career-high 21 points from Ilze Gotfrida and the defense held the Bonnies to 29.6% shooting, 0 – 15 from distance, to get the win. The Hawks took control behind a 17 – 2 run to lead 25 – 14. Saint Joe’s put the game away in the second half with a 12 – 4 run to take a 37 – 19 lead. SJU shot 25 – 61 (37.9%). Natasha Cloud had a game-high 8 assists to go along with 6 points and 5 rebounds.

Next Game – 1/30/2013 vs. Butler at the Hagan Arena

TEMPLE 8 – 11 Overall, 1 – 3 Atlantic 10, 1 – 2 Big Five

Results – Won 59 – 51 at Penn, Lost 71 – 55 vs. LaSalle at McGonigle Hall

#25 VILLANOVA 16 – 3 Overall, 5 – 1 Big East, 4 – 0 Big Five

Results –Lost 65 – 60 (OT) at Providence, Won 64 – 59 vs. #22 Syracuse at The Pavilion

Summary –

Providence 65 #25 Villanova 60 (OT) – The six game winning streak came to an end for Villanova in an odd fashion. The Wildcats held a 29 – 10 at halftime that was gained by a 21 – 0 run at Providence. The game seemed to be going the Wildcats way. The Friars owned the second half, but the Wildcats still led 49 – 45 with 3:23 on the clock. Villanova held a 51 – 49 lead on two free throws by Lauren Burford with 13 seconds to play, but Symone Roberts of Providence drove the length of the floor for a game tying layup. The Wildcats took a 57 – 55 lead on a three-ball by Burford. Providence tied the game, then finished it with an 8 – 0 run. Providence pulled down 30 offensive rebounds to gain a 29 – 12 advantage in 2nd Chance Points. Burford scored 20, her first career 20-point game. Laura Sweeney scored 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for her 14th career double-double. She added a career-high 5 blocked shots and 4 steals.

#25 Villanova 64 #22 Syracuse 59 – As the Villanova men’s basketball team was upsetting Syracuse, the women were preparing for a game against the nationally ranked Orange. Villanova swept the doubleheader. The Wildcats held a 38 – 33 halftime lead. Syracuse tied the game at 55 at the 16 minute mark. From that point a 7 – 2 run by the Orange would give them their largest lead at 51 – 46 with 11:29 to play. Villanova tied the game at 54 with 8 minutes to play behind an 8 – 3 run. A three-pointer by Rachel Roberts gave the Wildcats a 57 – 54 lead at the 6:46 mark, and Villanova held it for the remainder of the game. With 8 seconds to play Devon Kane ended it by hitting 2 free throws. Roberts, who missed the Providence game with the flu, scored a career-high 26 points. She also set career marks in made field goals with 9 and made three-point shots with 6. Laura Sweeney had her third consecutive double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Devon Kane set a career mark handing out 6 assists. For Syracuse Elasher Hall scored 17 points and Brittany Sykes added 14.

Next Game – 1/29/2013 at Connecticut

DREXEL 13 – 5 Overall, 6 – 1 CAA

Results – Won 85 – 73 at Northeastern, Lost 65 – 56 vs. Delaware at the DAC

Summary –

Drexel 85 Northeastern 73 – Drexel Coach Denise Dillon got her 100th CAA win and became the fifth league coach

to reach such a milestone. Also setting a record was Hollie Mershon scoring 33 points. The last Drexel player to score 33 was Kamile Nacickaite who got that number against Akron on November 19, 2011. Mershon also added 7 rebounds and 8 assists, and set a career mark of 12 made field goals. Taylor Wootton set another career mark with 26 points, her third straight 20 points plus game.

Delaware 65 Drexel 56 – The final score showed a spread of 9 points, but the game was much closer than the final score indicated. Both teams entered the DAC undefeated in CAA play. The winner would leave with sole possession of first place in the conference. The Blue Hens lead 33 – 28 at halftime, and stretched the lead to 40 – 31 in a four and a half-minute span. At the 10:38 mark Delaware was in front 46 – 38. The Dragons began to crawl back into the game. With 3:59 on the clock a layup by Hollie Mershon cut the deficit to 54 – 52. Delaware answered with a three by Trumane Lucas and a jump shot by Elena Delle Donne to move in front by 7 points. The Hens closed the game by making their next 6 free throws. During the final run Drexel missed four shots and got only four free throws to the end. Drexel was led by Mershon who scored 17 points and added 7 assists. Taylor Wootton had been hot from the field recently. She was held to 2 points. Drexel shot 19 – 56 (33.9%) and made 7 of 24 three-point shots. Delaware was 23 – 55 from the field (41.8%), 7 of 15 from deep. Elena Delle Donne scored a game-high 24 points. Kayla Miller 12 points and handed out 7 assists tying a career-high. Danielle Parker had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Hollie Mershon was named the CAA Co-Player of the Week for the third time this season.
