Philly Women’s College Basketball Player of the Week
Tanaya Atkinson, Temple – The senior guard helped Temple earn their first American Athletic Conference win of the season scoring 23 points and taking down 11 rebounds. She scored half of the Temple points in the fourth quarter in the come from behind victory. This was the 10th double-double of the season for Atkinson.

DREXEL 10 – 5 Overall, 2 – 1 CAA
Results – Lost 56 – 48 at James Madison
Summary – The Dragons lost their first conference game of the year falling victim to a 15 – 0 run by JMU in the third quarter. The team was hurt by 18 turnovers and shot 33.9% from the floor. Bailey Greenberg with a career-high 19 points making 7 of 15 field goal attempts and was a perfect 4 for 4 from the line. Drexel takes on William & Mary, a make up game from the postponed January 5th game due to inclement weather.

LA SALLE 5 – 10 Overall, 0 – 3 Atlantic 10, 1 – 2 Big Five
Results – Lost 69 – 56 vs. George Mason at the Gola Arena, Lost 77 – 51 at Richmond.
Summary – The Explorers dropped two conference games, but did get leading scorer Amy Griffin back in the lineup. Griffin averaged 12.5 per game. Adreana Miller put up 24 at Richmond. La Salle committed an average of 20 turnovers per game and was at a 33 – 9 total points off turnovers disadvantage. The Explorers take a one game break from Atlantic 10 play going to Harvard. La Salle is seeking their first A10 win of the season.

PENN – 6 – 5 Overall, 0 – 1 Ivy League, 1 – 1 Big Five
Results – Lost 70 – 55 vs. Princeton at the Palestra
Summary – The University of Pennsylvania lost to their arch-rivals for the first time in five games. Princeton Coach Courtney Banghart said both teams are well-built teams with good front lines and guards and that makes these games and epic battlea. The Tigers were a little better. Princeton forward Bella Alarie had 18 points and 12 rebounds while adding 8 blocked shots. Guard Gabrielle Rush made a career-high 5 three-pointers. For the Quakers Anna Ross scored 11 points and had 7 assists, and did not turn the ball over. Eleah Parker scored 14 points. Princeton won the fourth quarter 22 – 13. Penn will host Cornell and Columbia this upcoming weekend.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 7 – 8 Overall, 2 – 1 Atlantic 10, 0 – 3 Big Five
Results – Won 70 – 64 at St. Bonaventure, Lost 65 – 59 vs. Dayton at the Hagan Arena
Summary – The Hawks split their Atlantic 10 games this week winning on the road, but losing at home. Forward Chelsea Woods had two big games averaging 14.5 points and 11 rebounds per game. Saint Joe’s played a close game against the Flyers, but were outscored 22 – 13 in the fourth quarter. SJU takes on the Richmond Spiders on Wednesday with a noon tip-off.

TEMPLE 9 – 5 Overall, 1 – 1 American, 2 – 1 Big Five
Results – Won 55 – 52 vs. SMU at McGonigle Hall
Summary – The Owls evened their American record with a hard-fought win over the Mustangs. Tanaya Atkinson led the way for Temple with 23 points and 11 rebounds, her 10th double-double of the campaign. Mia Davis had 10 points, and her layup with 1:11 to play provided the winning points. Nationally ranked USF visits McGonigle on Wednesday.

#21 VILLANOVA 12 – 2, 2 – 2 Big East, 3 – 0 Big Five
Results – Lost 76 – 53 vs. Butler, Won 75 – 57 vs. Xavier both at the Jake Nevin Field House
Summary – The Wildcats stayed even in Big East play. Nova lost to Butler, but bounced back with a win over Xavier. Alex Louin scored 24 total points, totaling 1,201 career-points, and 12 rebounds. She handed out 8 assists in the Xavier game. Kelly Jekot scored 21 in the victory and added a career-high tying 6 assists and took down 5 rebounds.
