Carl JonesThe senior guard completed a big week for Saint Joseph’s averaging over 17.5 points per game.  It was not the numbers that were big for the Hawks.  It was more a case of when he got the points.  In the win against Fordham Jones scored 10 of the last 13 points for the team including the two free throws that gave Saint Joe’s the victory.  Against Big Five an Atlantic 10 rival Temple Jones scored 16 points that included two three-pointers that helped to wipe out a 9-point Temple lead late in the game.  Jones late layup gave the Hawks a lead.  Jones was credited with 4 assists in that contest.

LA SALLE 14 – 6 Overall, 4 – 2 Atlantic 10, 2 – 0 Big Five

Results – Lost 63 – 60 vs. Massachusetts at the Gola Arena, Won 80 – 71 at George Washington

Summary –

Massachusetts 63 LaSalle 60 – The Explorers came into the game riding wins over two nationally ranked teams.  Coach Dr. John Giannini knew Massachusetts would present problems for his team.  That came to fruition as UMass guard Chaz Williams scored a game-winning layup with 8 seconds to play.  LaSalle forward Jerrell Wright had his three-pointer blocked by Raphael Putney to deny the Explorers and opportunity to win the game.  Tyreek Duren gave the Explorers their last lead at 60 – 69 on a layup with 38 seconds to play.  Wright and Ramon Galloway scored a team-high 16 points each.  Duren scored 10.  Putney scored a game-high 17 points for the Minutemen.

LaSalle 80 George Washington 71 – The Explorers had 6 players score in double figures and led the entire game in posting the win in Foggy Bottom.  Senior guard D.J. Peterson scored a career-high 15 points.  Ramon Galloway also connected for 15 points.  Peterson drained 5 from beyond the arc, four in the first half.  Jerrell Wright and Sam Mills had 12 each.  Tyreek Duren and Tyrone Garland each scored 11 points.  Balance was the key for LaSalle.  The Explorers led by 20 in the second half before the Colonials made a 13 – 1 run to cut the deficit to 8 points.  GW closed to within 5 before back to back Explorer baskets ended the game.

Next Game – 2/9/13 at Dayton

PENN – 4 – 16 Overall, 1 – 2 Ivy League, 0 – 4 Big Five

Results – Won 62 – 58 vs. Columbia, Lost 71 – 69 vs. Cornell at the Palestra

Summary –

Penn 62 Columbia 58 – Miles Cartwright scored the last 8 points in the game including a jump shot with 30 seconds to play that broke a tie at 56 with 30 seconds on the clock that gave Penn their first Ivy League victory of the season.  Cartwright scored 22 points in the game and was a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line.  The junior guard converted 4 free throws in the last 14 seconds to win it for the Red and Blue.  Darien Nelson-Henry filled the stat sheet for the Quakers scoring 11 points, grabbing 4 rebounds, handing out 2 assists, while blocking 4 shots, and making 3 steals.  Brian Barbour scored a game-high 21 points for Columbia.

Cornell 71 Penn 69 – The Red and Blue led 51 – 41 with 15 minutes to play.  The Big Red responded with a 21 – 5 run to move in front 62 – 56.  Penn did not go away as guard Cameron Crocker scored 5 straight points to get the Quakers to within a point at 62 – 61.  Penn tied the game at 64 on a three by Dau Jok.  Later a three by Miles Cartwright put the Red and Blue ahead 69 – 67 with just over two minutes to play.  Cornell got two free throws from Galal Cancer and a layup by Errick Peck to get the lead back.  Penn had the ball, but a 5 second violation cost the Red and Blue a chance to get back even.  Patrick Lucas-Perry had a team-high 14 points for Penn.  Tony Hicks and Darien Nelson-Henry each scored 10 points.  Peck had a game-high 20 points.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 13 – 7 Overall, 4 – 3 Atlantic 10, 2 – 1 Big Five

Results – Won 66 – 62 at Fordham, Won 70 – 69 vs. Temple at the Hagan Arena

Summary –

Saint Joseph’s 66 Fordham 62 – In a game where the lead would change six times in the final four minutes the clutch free throw shooting of Carl Jones made the difference in the road victory for the Hawks.  Jones made two free throws with 33 seconds on the clock that turned out to be the game winning points. The senior guard scored 10 of the final 13 points for the team, and made 7 of 8 in the last-minute.  Jones scored 19 points in the game.  Halil Kanacevic added 12 and Langston Galloway contributed 10 points.  Ronald Roberts recorded his ninth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Saint Joseph’s 70 Temple 69 – In what may be the most heated rivalry in the Big Five Saint Joe’s came back from a 61 – 52 deficit and held on to beat Temple.  The Hawks trailed by 9 points with 5:39 on the clock then went on a 14 – 3 run to tie the game at 64.  The leading scorers for both teams Khalif Wyatt for Temple and Carl Jones for Saint Joseph’s had been dueling, then each player took over at a critical time for each team.  Jones untied the game with a layup and Wyatt answered with a layup of his own to tie the game for the tenth time at 66 with 55 seconds on the clock.  Saint Joseph’s forward Halil Kanacevic had the ball at the top of the key behind the three-point line.  Instead of launching a three he lobbed the ball toward the basket where C.J. Aiken and Ronald Roberts had an open lane to the basket.  Aiken got to the ball and out the ball in with 25 seconds to play giving the Hawks a 68 – 66 lead.  After a Temple miss Kanacevic converted two free throws to stretch the SJU lead to 70 – 66.  Wyatt answered with a long three-pointer to cut the lead to 70 – 69.  Jones was fouled, but missed the front end of a one-and-one giving the Owls another chance to pull the game out.  Wyatt went to the basket, but his shot was blocked out-of-bounds by Kanacevic as the clock showed point 7 seconds.  Temple found Wyatt in the corner, but his off-balance, desperation three was short.  Saint Joseph’s got a critical win.  Saint Joseph’s had 4 players in double figures led by Ronald Roberts who posted his tenth double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.  Jones scored 16 points while handing out 4 assists.  Aiken also scored 16 points.  Kanacevic scored 12 points while adding 9 rebounds and 8 assists.  Saint Joseph’s had a 40 – 16 advantage in points in the paint.  Wyatt scored a career-high 34 points to lead Temple.  Guard Will Cummings added 11 points.  Anthony Lee took down 10 rebounds.

Carl Jones was named Philadelphia Big Five Player of the Week.

Next Game – 2/6/2013 at Dayton

TEMPLE 14 – 7 Overall, 3 – 4 Atlantic 10, 1 – 1 Big Five

Results – Won 71 – 64 vs. Richmond at the Liacouris Center, Lost 70 – 69 at Saint Joseph’s

Summary –

Temple 71 Richmond 64 – Scootie Randall regained his scoring touch getting 21 points, 14 in the first half to lead the Owls to the win.  Randall made 8 of 18 shots and 3 of 5 from beyond the arc.  Temple led by eight points at halftime.  Richmond opened the second half with a 17 – 7 run to take a lead. With the game tied at 61 neither team would score over a four-minute span.  Khalif Wyatt made a three-point shot with just over three minutes on the clock to give the Owls the lead.  The Cherry and White would not fall behind again.  Wyatt scored 19 points and got a career-high 7 assists and added 5 assists.  Anthony Lee recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.  Defensively Temple held Richmond to 39.6% shooting.

During halftime the school retired the number 6 of Temple great Hal Lear.

Next Game – 2/6/2013 vs. Charlotte the Liacouris Center

VILLANOVA 13 – 8 Overall, 4 – 3 Big East, 2 – 2 Big Five

Results – Lost 65 – 60 at Notre Dame

Summary –

Notre Dame 65 Villanova 60 – The Wildcats knocked off two top five teams the previous week.  Nova looked for a road win against a prominent program to establish make a statement.  Villanova fell just short at South Bend.  The Wildcats held a three-point lead with 14 minutes to play.  The Irish took an eight-point lead ten minutes later.  What the Wildcats did not expect was 18 points from Notre Dame Freshman Cameron Biedscheid to score a career-high 18 points, 15 in the second half.  Jack Cooley recorded a double-double with 17 points and 16 rebounds.  Yet the Wildcats stayed in the game and a three-point basket by Darrun Hilliard at the 24 second mark got Villanova to within three making it a one possession game.  Following a Notre Dame turnover Hilliard put up a game-tying attempt from three-point land, but it was off the mark.  Hilliard scored 14 points.  Mouphtaou Yarou had a game-high 20 points.

Providence 55 Villanova 52 – The Wildcats wiped out a 9-point Providence lead tying the game on two free throws by junior guard James Bell.  Providence had a chance for a last shot to win the game.  With 12 seconds to play Friar guard Vincent Council put up a jump shot that missed.   In the ensuing scramble for the rebound Josh Fortune snagged the ball for Providence.  He found Bryce Cotton at the top of the key.  Cotton put up a three that went through the net with 2.2 seconds to play.  Villanova got a last second desperation try by Mouphtaou Yarou, but his shot went off the back of the rim, and Providence escaped with the victory.  Cotton led all scorers with 18 points.  Darrun Hilliard led Villanova with 17 points making 10 for 10 from the free throw line.  Yarou recorded a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.  Villanova shot 27.5% for the game (14 – 51).  From the three-point line the Wildcats were 2 – 15, 0 – 7 in the second half.

Next Game – 2/5/2013 at DePaul

DREXEL 9 – 13 Overall, 5 –5 CAA

Results – Lost 66 – 64 vs. Delaware at the DAC, Won 58 – 54 at George Mason, Lost 59 – 52 at Northeastern

Summary –

Delaware 66 Drexel 64 – The Dragons got off to a slow start falling behind 11 – 2.  In the second half the lead would grow to 15 points before Drexel stated a comeback that came up just short as the 3 game Drexel winning streak came to an end.  The Dragons had three chances to get the winner, but Frantz Massenat could not come up with the game winner.  Kyle Anderson made a free throw for Delaware to get to the final margin of victory.  Drexel fell despite a career-high 30 points from Damion Lee.  Twenty of his points came in the second half.  Massenat was the only other Dragon to score in double figures with 15 points.

Drexel 58 George Mason 54 – The Dragons got off to another slow start as the Patriots took a 20-point lead in the first half.  For Drexel to make a comeback they needed a spark.  That spark was Damion Lee who scored 29 points including the layup that gave Drexel a 50 – 49 lead with 7:17 to play.  With the game tied at 52 neither team would score for three minutes.  George Mason got a basket that Lee answered to tie the game at 54 at the 2:16 mark.  Lee would drain a three-pointer with 23 seconds on the clock to give Drexel the lead they would keep.  Drexel missed chances at the free throw line that would have put the game away.  After a Massenat miss Byron Allen raced up the court as his team trailed 57 – 54.  Hoping to get a shot to tie the game, Allen was stripped by Lee who was fouled and converted one of two for the final points of the game.  Derrick Thomas was the only other Drexel player to score double figures with 12 points.  In the second half Drexel held George Mason to 16 points on 28% shooting.  The Dragons out rebounded the Patriots 26 – 12 in the final 20 minutes.

Northeastern 59 Drexel 52 – Dartaye Ruffin contributed a double-double, but it was not enough as Drexel lost a CAA road game in Boston.  The junior forward scored 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.  Drexel fell behind early again.  The Dragons went ahead 45 – 43 on a three-pointer by Derrick Thomas.  Northeastern answered with an 8 – 0 run then made the free throws to keep Drexel at bay.  Thomas scored a team-high 13 points while Frantz Massenat and Damion Lee each had 10 points.  Drexel controlled the boards 35 – 25 as Daryl McCoy also had 11 rebounds.  Drexel had 18 on the offensive end but could only muster 13 second chance points.
