Philly Schools Win Three of Four Games; Drexel Remains Undefeated in CAA North, Saint Joseph’s in Position to Tie for First Place in Atlantic 10 North, Temple Moves into Second Place in the American

Nearing the end of the regular season the Philadelphia schools get ready for the post season against top flight opposition. Three teams won, Villanova fell to #14 Denver in Colorado. At Vanderbilt Meghan Hoffman recorded her 37th assist of the season tying the program record for assists in a single season. Karson Harris set the Drexel program record for most goals in a single season.

Temple 13 Vanderbilt 12 –

The Owls won their seventh straight game and moved into second place in the American posting a 7 – 2 record, one game ahead of Commodores. The team meet again on Sunday to determine seeding. Either way they meet in the semifinal round. Meghan Hoffman handed out her 37th assist of the year which tied the Temple record for most assists in a single season. Hoffman recorded 2 assists. Her helper with 10:32 left in the second half to Bella Mastropietro tied the score at 11 and ignited a 3-goal push to put the game in the win column. The Owls played from behind for most of the game, but showed resilience.

“It was such a good showing from us,” said Temple Coach Bonnie Rosen. “I am really excited about our ability to play the game that’s on the field and adjust and adapt and that has been a key all year. We can handle going down goals, or the ball not going in, or going in against us and stay calm and find a way.”

Mastropietro, Julie Schickling, and Bridget Whitaker scored 3 goals apiece. For Whitaker it is her fifth straight hat trick. Jen Rodzewich found the back of the net twice. Six players got a goal for the Owls. Callie Sundin scored a game-high 4 goals while Griffin Gearhardt put the ball in the net three times. Temple put 24 shots on goal while holding Vanderbilt to 17, and took advantage of a 9 – 4 edge in free position shots. The regular season concludes on Sunday in Nashville.

Drexel 17 Towson 7

The Drexel Dragons remain undefeated in the CAA North at 4 – 0 taking a 17 – 7 decision over the Towson Tigers at VIdas Field to close the regular season. The postseason tournament is schedule for May 7th and 9th in Harrisonburg, VA. The Dragons ended the campaign on a high-note allowing 7 goals. It tied the least number of goals allowed by Drexel. They gave up 7 goals against Villanova earlier in the year. It was a record day for Karson Harris and Lucy Schneidereith. Harris scored 4 goals and set the school record for most goals in a season at 55. Schneidereith netted 6 goals and set a milestone of 100 career goals. Coleen Grady handed out 3 assists for 33 this year which ties the program record for most assists in a single season. It was the 100th coaching win for Jill Batcheller.

Saint Joseph’s 10 Duquesne 9 –

The Hawks won over the Dukes on a goal by Stephanie Kelly with 1:53 remaining to play. Saint Joseph’s jumped out to an early lead getting 5 goals in the first ten minutes of the game and propelled the team to a 8 – 3 halftime lead. The second half belonged to Duquesne who fought back to tie the game on a goal by Sydney Reed at the 4:22 mark. Sam McGee assisted on the Kelly game-winner. Lauren Figura scored a game-high 5 goals, and reached that mark for the third consecutive game. Kelly assisted 5 times for 8 points, one shy of her season-high. Saint Joe’s (6-2) plays #24 UMass (7-1) at Sweeney Field to conclude the regular season. Should the Hawks win, they finish in a deadlock with the Minutemen for first place in the Atlantic 10 North.

#14 Denver 18 Villanova 10 –

The Wildcats trailed 7 – 4 after one half. But the Pioneers opened the second with a 5 – 1 run to earn an 18 – 10 win in Denver. Katie Comerford scored two goals, back to back scores for the Wildcats. She also assisted twice. Haley Driscoll also netted two goals for Villanova. Goal keeper Alexa Mora made 15 saves in the game. For Denver Mackenzie Wallevand had a game-high 5 goals while Bea Behrins scored 4 while recording 2 assists. Villanova and Denver play again on Sunday in the regular season finale. The Big East Tournament hopes for the Wildcats are still alive. Following the conclusion of league games on Sunday the seedings will be set.
