Saint Joseph’s Advances to Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship Final

#3 Saint Jose’s Defeats #2 Lock Haven, Will Play #1 VCU for the Title

The Saint Joseph’s Hawks advance to their fifth straight conference final with a 4 – 2 win over Lock Haven in the semifinal round at Cary Street Field in Richmond. The Hawks will face the VCU Rams, the tournament top-seed, who won 1 – 0 over the Richmond Spiders earlier in the day.

The three-time defending league champion Hawks will go for the fourth and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Emerging victorious SJU avenged the only Atlantic 10 defeat this season.

Sara Hayes contributed a game-high 2 goals. Hayes got the first one at 5:42 of the first quarter. Anna Miller scored seven minutes later for a two goal lead. Twice Lock Haven cut the deficit to one goal. The last time was at the 42:33 mark of the fourth quarter. Hayes answered a minute and a half later to ice the win, collecting the ball and fired it to the far post. Emily Peters collected the other SJU goal. Martina Spangenberg and Jazmin Palma put in the two goals for the Bald Eagles.

Saint Joe’s goal keeper Robin Bleekemolen faced 11 shots and saved 9. Joaquina Orlandini made 7 saves for Lock Haven. Saint Joseph’s had a 19 – 16 edge in shots.

The Hawks and the Rams for the crown on Saturday. It will be the first time the teams will play each other this season.
