Two Locals Participate in the Final Day of Competition
June 14, 2025 –
The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships concluded featuring the championship events for the women. Big Five schools Villanova and the University of Pennsylvania had an athlete each participating; Wildcats runner Sadie Sigfstead in the 5000m, and Angeludi Asaah in red and blue stripes throwing the discus.
No points were added to the team scoreboard for the Philly schools.
Sigfstead in the Women’s 500m finished 23rd covering the distance in 16:06.70. The best split for the Villanova junior was at the 1800m mark posting a time of 1:12.21. She was running in her second event of the meet competing in the 10,000m on Thursday. Sigfstead achieved All-American honors in both races. She joins Carole Zajac and Caroline Alcorta to be the only runners in program history to be named All-American in both the 5000m and 10,000m.
The race was closely contested early which meant this could be decided in the last few laps. Sigfstead was in the back of the pack along the rail. The pace picked up at the ten minute mark, but many runners including the Wildcat remained in a bunch. As the race pace picked up Sigfstead faded back. This race would become much like the 10,000m where Pamela Kosgei would go to the lead in the last laps. Kosgei did not dominate like she did in the previous race, but would not be passed to bring home the double in the distance races. The winning time was 15:33.96. Vera Sjoberg from Boston U. placed second running a 15:34.77.
Asaah had a best discus throw of 50.33m. Her season best was 57.04m. In this meet her longest throw came on her second of the day. She achieved All-American status. The winner in the event, Cierra Jackson of Fresno State, set a meet record with a distance of 65.82m, also her personal best. The previous meet record was held by Arizona State’s Jorinde Van Kliinken, who also holds the collegiate record (70.22 in 2021). Her throw also in 2021 was 65.01m.
Georgia won the team title scoring 73 points. USC finished second with 47 points, four points better than Texas A&M.
