First Round and Semifinal Men’s Events

The NCAA East Region Track and Field meet began on Wednesday, May 28 at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. First round races determined who would qualify for quarterfinal round events, or for semifinal round participants at the NCAA National Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon next week. Overall six athletes move on; four from Penn and two from Villanova.
Going to Oregon
Dylan Throop from the University of Pennsylvania qualified in the Men’s 10,000m where the top 12 overall moved on. Throop finished 10th overall covering the distance in 29:07.67. His final split was his fastest and the best running a 1:05.55. McCallum Rowe of La Salle also ran in the event placing 27th with a time of 29:47.24. The fastest split for Rowe came in the 3600m split posting a time of 1:09.56. He did not qualify for another run. The top qualifier from the East Region us Dylan Schubert from Furman who hit the tape in a time of 29:00.44.
Qualified for the Quarterfinal Round
In the Men’s 1500m Villanova’s Liam Murphy and Penn’s Edwin Klanke qualified for the quarterfinal round. In the initial round the top 5 in each heat and the next four fastest times would get to the starting line on Friday. Murphy placed third overall with a time of 3:40.00. He ran second in heat four. Klanke was fifth in heat three running a 3:44.32 time. Murphy holds the collegiate record 3:33.02 in the event set on March 27, 2025.
Two runners who wear the Red and Blue will line up in the Men’s 400m Hurdles on Friday. Ryan Matulonis placed third overall winning heat one posting a 50.12 effort. Alex Sadikov had the 17th fastest time of 50.71 finishing fourth in heat three. The top three finishers in each heat and the next six fastest times would determine the 24 runners who will be in the quarterfinal round.
Dan Watcke was the second Wildcat to move on placing 8th overall in the Men’s 800m running a 1:47.58. He was second in heat one. The fastest split for Watcke came in the last where he ran a 53.72.
Those Who Did Not Move On
Nayyir Newash-Campbell was in the Men’s 400m for Penn. He placed 40th overall running the distance in 47.19 to place 6th in heat 3.
In the field where the top 12 finishers in each event would make the trip to Eugene, none from the Big Five would do so. Scott Dochat of Penn threw a 60.71m in the Men’s Hammer Throw for 36th place. Atticus Soehren of the Red and Blue placed 19th in the Men’s Javelin with a distance of 65.94m. Justin Miller of Villanova placed 26th in the Men’s Long Jump with a distance of 7.28m.
