Penn Will Play Army in a First Round Game

The University of Pennsylvania women’s lacrosse team lost a heartbreaker in the semifinal round of the Ivy League Lacrosse Tournament to Yale. But their season did not end as the 10 – 6 Quakers earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Penn is unseeded and plays Army (13 – 3) at 3 p.m. on May 9 in College Park, Maryland the home of the #6 seeded Maryland Terrapins. Fairfield will play Maryland in the other first round game.
Penn had impressive wins over the season defeating four ranked teams that received tournament bids; Loyola Maryland, Maryland, Princeton and Brown, Should both the Quakers and the Terrapins win their first round game they meet in a rematch. Penn won 13 – 12 over Maryland on March 31.
All four teams that appeared in the Ivy League Tournament got a bid to the NCAA Tournament. A sign of respect for the Ivy League shown by the Selection Committee. League Champion Yale (14 – 3) is the 7th overall seed and hosts UAlbany in the first round. Syracuse and Brown (10 – 6) will play in the other contest. Princeton (14 – 3) meets UMass in a game at Johns Hopkins to open their tournament run.
The Red and Blue, coached by Karin Brower Corbett, features Ivy Award winners: Anna Brandt, Midfielder of the Year; Natasha Gorriaran, Defender of the Year; and Orly Sedranski, Rookie and Goal keeper of the Year.
Army, too, fell in their Patriot League semifinal game to Navy. Prior to that Army was on an 8-game winning streak and finished second in the conference to Loyola, Maryland. Both teams and Navy, tournament titlist, will be in the Tournament. Allison Reilly leads the team with 100 points (59 goals and 41 assists), and Brigid Duffy who has 84 points (62 and 22). Both players are All-League First Team performers.
The eight top seeded teams in the tournament are; 1. North Carolina, 2. defending champion Boston College, 3. Northwestern, 4. Florida, 5. Virginia, 6. Maryland. 7. Yale, 8. John’s Hopkins.
