 Villanova Is Riding a Three-Game Big East Winning Streak, Drexel Plays to a CAA Draw

The Villanova Wildcats are on a three-game Big East winning streak. Villanova won a 1 – 0 game at Xavier. Akinjide Awujo scored his first goal at the 14:32 mark, and that goal stood up for the rest of the game. Goalie Carson Williams posted his third shutout of the season. The Saint Joseph’s Hawks split their two games this week. The Hawks lost a non-conference game 2 – 1 against Hofstra. Going on the road for an Atlantic 10 game Saint Joe’s won 2 – 1 over George Washington. The Hawks got a SC Top 10 worthy goal on a bicycle kick by Chris Hunt, his first. James Fletcher scored in both games giving him a team-high in goals (4) and points. The Drexel Dragons posted a tie playing a scoreless draw against Elon. It was a physical game that saw 4 shots on goal. Three were by the Phoenix. The La Salle Explorers fell 2 – 1 in the second overtime against VCU. The Rams scored 5:38 into the game. The Explorers tied it on a goal by Junior Nare nearly nine minutes later. Damian Gallegos ended the game in the 109th minute. The University of Pennsylvania Quakers opened their Ivy League schedule falling to Cornell 3 – 0 at home. Harry Fuller gave the Big Red a lead scoring on a penalty kick 2:46 into the game. Goalie Dane Jacomen made 4 saves. The Temple Owls lost both conference games over the week getting shutout in each game. Memphis took home a 2 – 0 win, then at #12 SMU the Cherry and White fell 1 – 0. The Tigers got both goals within the first 20 minutes of the game. The Mustangs got their score in the 67th minute. Temple goalie Liam Cummings made 5 saves.

Villanova takes to the road going to Connecticut. Penn continues Ivy League play going to Columbia. Drexel has a game at UMass, Lowell. Coming to town will be Davidson who visits La Salle. Saint Joseph’s hosts Saint Louis. Temple has a non-conference game with Princeton on North Broad Street.

Games of September 27 – October 2, 2021

DREXEL 4 – 4 – 1 Overall, 2 – 1 – 1 CAA

Results – Tied 0 – 0 (2 OT) vs. Elon

Summary – Goalie Cameron Saunders made three second half saves against Elon. It was the third clean slate of the season for Saunders.

Next Game – October 9 at UMass, Lowell

LA SALLE 3 – 7 – 0 Overall, 0 – 3 – 0 Atlantic 10                                                                                                                                       

Results – Lost 2 – 1 (2 OT) vs. VCU

Summary – Goalie Carlos More saved 4 shots. The Explorers faced a 12 – 9 deficit in shots, 6 – 3 on goal. La Salle is looking for their first league win.

Next Game – October 9 vs. Davidson at McCarthy Stadium

PENN – 4 – 3 – 1 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 Ivy League      

Results– Lost 3- 0 vs. Cornell

Summary – The Red and Blue got but 2 shots on goal compared to 7 by the Big Red. Ben Stitz and Matt Leigh had the shots for Penn that required a save. Overall, Cornell had a 12 – 4 edge in shots.

Next Game – October 9 at Columbia

SAINT JOSEPH’S  4 – 7 – 0 Overall, 2 – 1 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 2 – 1 vs. Hofstra, Won 2 – 0 at George Washington

Summary – The Hawks and Pride waited through a 2-hour lightening delay. Hofstra scored at 1:12 into the second half for the margin of victory. Luis Ludson posted a shutout in DC. The Hawks had an 8 – 0 advantage in shots on goal.

Next Game – October 6 vs. Saint Louis at Sweeney Field

TEMPLE 1 – 5 – 2 Overall, 0 – 4 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 2 – 0 vs. Memphis, Lost 1 – 0 at #12 SMU

Summary – The Owls were outshot by a composite 32 – 12 and 13 – 4 on goal. Temple is on a 5-game losing streak. The Owls are looking for their first victory in the American.

Next Game – October 6 vs. Princeton at the Temple Soccer Complex

VILLANOVA 7 – 2 – 0 Overall, 3 – 0 – 0 Big East

Results – Won 1 – 0 at Xavier

Summary – Williams saved two at Xavier. The Wildcats were outshot by the Musketeers 8 – 4. Both teams put 2 on net.

Next Game – October 6 at UConn
