Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson established career-highs in points with 23 and rebounds with 18 in a high-profile win over LaSalle.  In that game Hollis-Jefferson made three consecutive corner jumpers to close out the game and grabbed key offensive rebounds to allow Temple to maintain their lead.  It was a big-time performance in an important game.  At Charlotte Hollis-Jefferson scored 8 points while adding 3 blocked shots and 3 steals.

Darrun Hilliard averaged 19 points this week scoring 14 against Rutgers and 22 against #17 Marquette.  Hilliard also played a stellar defensive game against the Marquette guard tandem.  Offensively, in that game the sophomore guard scored 11 of 13 points in a late stretch for the Wildcats to keep their cushion against the Golden Eagles

Week of February 18 – February 24, 2013 Games

LA SALLE 19 – 7 Overall, 9 – 4 Atlantic 10, 3 – 1 Big Five

Results – Lost 82 – 74 at Temple, Won 72 – 65 at Rhode Island

Summary –

LaSalle 72 Rhode Island 65 – In a bounce-back game the Explorers trailed 30 – 27 at halftime, but broke out in the second half with a 17 – 2 run.  URI got to within 6 with 1:25 to play as LaSalle went cold.  Taylor Dunn made 2 free throws with 34 seconds on the clock to give the Explorers the points they needed to hold on to the win.  Tyreek Duren paced the Explorers with 21 points.  Tyrone Garland added 14 and Ramon Galloway added 13 points.  Forward Jerrell Wright scored 12 points and added a career-high 15 rebounds.

Next Game – 3/2/13 vs. Duquesne at the Gola Arena

PENN – 7 – 19 Overall, 4 – 5 Ivy League, 0 – 4 Big Five

Results – Won 79 – 71 at Cornell, Lost 58 – 41 at Columbia

Summary –

Penn 79 Cornell 71 – Freshman guard Tony Hicks scored a career-high 29 points, the most any Penn freshman has scored since present Coach Jerome Allen put up 31 on the Big Red in 1992.  Hicks scored xx of his 29 points in the first half, yet Penn trailed 43 – 93 at halftime.  In the second half Penn clawed back into the game taking a 52 – 47 lead keyed by a 9 – 0 run led by Hicks.  Later in the half Patrick Lucas-Perry entered the game and scored 8 consecutive points to give the Red and Blue a 64 – 55 lead which they held for the remainder of the game.  Cornell was hot from the 3-point line in the first half making 7 of 15.  Penn closed it down in the second half as Cornell made only 3 of 12.  Miles Cartwright added 15 points for the Red and Blue and handed out a career-high 9 assists to go along with 6 rebounds.

Columbia 58 Penn 41 – The Red and Blue trailed 35 – 25 at halftime.  In the second half the Quakers turned up the defense holding the Lions to just 2 field goals, none on the last 15:18 of the game.  But it was not enough.  Why? Penn only scored 4 field goals in the latter period.  The foul line was a difference as Columbia made 15 of 22 free throws in the second half while Penn was 7 of 11.  Guard Tony Hicks was the only Penn player to score in double figures with 19 points.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 15 – 10 Overall, 6 – 6 Atlantic 10, 2 – 2 Big Five

Results – Won 71 – 59 vs. George Washington at the Hagan Arena

Summary –

Saint Joseph’s 71 George Washington 59 – The Hawks got a season-high 26 points from junior guard Langston Galloway as he tied his season-high of made 3-pointers with 6.  SJU took a 40 – 29 halftime lead and held the double-digit margin the rest of the way.  Guard Carl Jones scored 15 points and center C.J. Aiken added 13.  Forward Halil Kanacevic grabbed 10 rebounds.

Next Game – 2/27/2013 at Saint Louis

TEMPLE 19 – 8 Overall, 8 – 5 Atlantic 10, 1 – 1 Big Five

Results – Won 84 – 72 vs. LaSalle at the Liacouris Center, Won 71 – 51 at Charlotte

Summary –

Temple 71 Charlotte 51 – the first game was a one-point 89 – 88 shootout.  In this game Temple used defense to shut down Charlotte holding them to 27.4% shooting (17 – 62) and 1 of 12 from deep.  The Owls jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.  Temple led 39 – 24 at halftime.  Charlotte got no closer than 8.  Forward Scootie Randall had a game-high 18 points.  Khalif Wyatt added 12 and Jake O’Brien scored 10 points.  Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson scored 8 points, blocked 3 shots, and had 3 steals.  The Owls have a three-game winning streak.

Next Game – 2/28/2013 vs. Detroit at the Liacouris Center

VILLANOVA 18 – 10 Overall, 9 – 6 Big East, 2 – 2 Big Five

Results – Won 71 – 63 vs. Rutgers, Won 60 – 56 vs. #17 Marquette both at the Pavilion

Summary –

Villanova 71 Rutgers 63 – It was a tale of two halves for the Wildcats who trailed 31 – 21 at halftime.  In the second half Villanova exploded form 50 points to get the win.  The Wildcats starting five all scored in double figures.  Ryan Arcidiacono, Darrun Hilliard, and JayVaughn Pinkston all scored 14 points.  Guard James Bell scored 11 points.  Center Mouphtaou Yarou posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Next Game – 2/25/2013 at Seton Hall

DREXEL 11 – 17, Overall, 7 – 9 CAA

Results – Won 63 – 54 vs. Hofstra, Lost 73 – 71 (2OT) at Delaware, Lost 72 – 71 at Towson

Summary –

Drexel 63 Hofstra 54 – Early defense was a key for Drexel holding Hofstra to 5 field goals in the first half.  However, the Dragons shot only 38% to keep the Pride in the game.  Drexel forced 19 Hofstra turnovers leading to 19 Drexel points.  Damion Lee scored a team-high 17 points.  Frantz Massenat added 16 points, and Derrick Thomas scored 11.  Steve Mejia of Hofstra scored a game-high 22 points.

Delaware 73 Drexel 71 (2OT) – Drexel guard Frantz Massenat had his shot blocked at the buzzer by Jamelle Hagins that gave Delaware a double overtime victory in Newark.  The Blue Hens led for most of the game.  The Dragons took their first lead with 3:41 in regulation on a Damion Lee three-pointer.  Hagins tied the game at 52 with 1:09 in regulation play.  Drexel led in the first overtime only to have Delaware tie it on free throws by Devon Saddler at the 39 second mark.  Lee registered a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds.  Derrick Thomas scored 19 points, 9 in the overtime periods.  Massenat scored 17 points and handed out 6 assists.  Saddler scored a game-high 31 points and was 11 – 15 from the free throw line.

Towson 72 Drexel 71 – The Dragons had opportunities in the final seconds to pull out a win.  Trailing by two points Damion Lee drove the lane and missed.  Forward Kazembe Abif rebounded the miss and was fouled.  He missed the first with 1.2 seconds on the clock as Drexel dropped another close one.  Frantz Massenat scored 24 points for the Dragons as he went 10 – 12 form the free throw line.  Derrick Thomas scored 13 points his 8th consecutive game scoring 10 points or more.  Lee scored 12 points all in the second half.  Daryl McCoy scored 10 points.  Jerome Hairston of Towson scored a career-high 20 points.
