In his first Big East game against St. John’s the freshman guard scored a career-high 32 points leading the Wildcats to the win.  Arcidiacono made a career-best 7 three-point shots, and was good from the free throw line 11 of 13 times.

Week of December 29 – January 6, 2013 Games

LA SALLE 10 – 3 Overall, 2 – 0 Big Five

Results – Lost 76 – 59 at Miami, Won 74 – 57 vs. Penn at the Gola Arena

Summary –

Miami 76 LaSalle 59 – The Explorers held a 36 – 30 lead at the break, but made only 11 of 34 in the second half, 1 of 8 three-pointers in the loss at Miami.  The Hurricanes opened the second half with a 10 – 2 run.  LaSalle got back to a 45 all tie, but never took another lead.  Miami answered scoring 14 of the next 16 points to put the game out of reach.  Tyrone Garland had a game-high 20 points while Ramon Galloway added 12.  Tyreek Duren was limited to 5 points making just 1 of 9 field goal attempts.

LaSalle 74 Penn 57 – The Explorers got 17 points each from Tyreek Duren and Ramon Galloway, and 15 from Tyrone Garland en route to the victory.  Penn committed 21 turnovers, 15 in the first half.  The Red and Blue stayed in the game, but LaSalle opened the second half with a 19 – 9 run to take control.  Duren had 13 points in the run, 8 consecutive at one point.  For the full story visit www.philycollegesports.com and read “LaSalle Intensifies The Defense, Beats Penn 74 – 57.”

Next Game – 1/9/13 at Charlotte

PENN – 2 – 11 Overall, 0 – 2 Big Five

Results – Lost 70 – 57 at #17 Butler

Summary –

Butler 70 Penn 57 – The Red and Blue gave the 17th ranked Bulldogs all they could handle, but went cold late in the game losing at Hinkle Fieldhouse.  With less than 15 minutes to play Penn trailed the Bulldogs 42 – 40.  Butler kept the lead, but Penn did not go away crawling back to with 3 at 52 – 49.  Butler scored the next 10 straight points to take control of the game.  Butler out rebounded Penn 36 – 21 giving the Bulldogs an 18 – 4 edge in 2nd Chance Points, and a 36 – 16 Points in the Paint margin.  Miles Cartwright led Penn with 15 points.  Tony Hicks scored 10 points.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 8 – 4 Overall, 0 – 1 Big Five

Result – Won 63 – 49 at Drexel , Won 70 – 60 at Morgan State

Summary –

Saint Joseph’s 63 Drexel 49 – The Hawks took a 23 – 18 lead at halftime behind a 13 – 0 run that ended the first half.   Early in the second half Saint Joseph’s increased the led to 12 points.  Drexel mounted a comeback cutting the deficit to 41 – 36, but Saint Joe’s pulled away to get the win.  It was a big day for center C.J. Aiken who scored 19 points, making 6 of 6 from the floor and 5 for 5 at the free throw line.  Aiken also blocked 6 shots.  Langston Galloway scored 13 points while Carl Jones added 11.

Saint Joseph’s 70 Morgan State 60 – Carl Jones led all scorers with 17 points and Halil Kanacevic pulled down 12 rebounds leading the Hawks to the win.  Early in the second half the Hawks went on an 8 – 0 run taking a 40 – 29 lead at the 15:37 mark.  Morgan State would get no closer than 8 points for the remainder of the game.  Saint Joe’s shot 44% for the game, while holding Morgan State to 30.4%.  Langston Galloway scored 16 points, and Ronald Roberts, Jr. recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Next Game – 1/9/2013 vs. Butler at the Hagan Arena

TEMPLE 10 – 3 Overall, 1 – 0 Big Five

Results – Won 75 – 57 vs. Bowling Green, Lost 69 – 62 at #6 Kansas

Summary –

Temple 75 Bowling Green 57 – With the win Temple recorded its 1800th win in program history.  The only programs to reach the 1800 win mark are; Kentucky (2,098), Kansas (2,081), North Carolina (2,073), Duke (1,982), and Syracuse (1,854).  Interesting that Temple played three of those schools this season.  Five Temple players reached double figures in scoring; Jake O’Brien put up a career-high 15 points, Dalton Pepper scored 10, Scootie Randall netted 11, Anthony Lee had 10, and Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson totaled 11 points.  Khalif Wyatt recorded a career-high in assists with 8.  As a team Temple recorded 23 assists on their 27 baskets.  Temple led by 14 at halftime, then put the game out of reach with an 18 – 9 run to start the second half.   The largest lead was 27 points.

#6 Kansas 69 Temple 62 – Temple was poised to pull off another upset of a Top Ten team, but a steal and dunk by Jayhawks forward Ben McLemore with 2:42 to play gave Kansas a lead they would hold on to for the rest of the game.  The Owls committed three turnovers in the game and the third one was critical.  Temple shot 19 of 63 (30.2%) while Kansas was 25 of 55 (43.6%).  Khalif Wyatt led Temple with 26 points.  Anthony Lee and Will Cummings each scored 11 points.

Next Game – 1/10/2013 at Xavier

VILLANOVA 10 – 4 Overall, 1 – 0 Big East, 2 – 2 Big Five

Results – Won 98 – 86 (OT) vs. St. John’s

Summary –

Villanova 98 St. John’s 86 (OT) – It was a wild Big East opener for Villanova as the game went to overtime.  The Wildcats outscored the Red Storm 15 – 3 in the overtime period keyed by two steals and two resulting layups by Darrun Hilliard to earn the victory.  The Red Storm had an 81 – 78 lead with 1:45 remaining in regulation when Hilliard went to the free throw line converting all three to tie the game.  Pinkston and Harrison both made two free throws to send the game into overtime.  Ryan Arcidiacono scored a career-high 32 points making 7 three-pointers.  JayVaughn Pinkston added 26 points in the victory.  St. John’s guard D’Angelo Harrison led all scorers with a career-best 36 points.

Ryan Arcidiacono was named the Big Five Player of the Week, and was the Big East Rookie of the Week.

DREXEL 5 – 9 Overall, 1 – 1 CAA

Results – Lost 63 – 49 vs. Saint Joseph’s at the DAC, Won 77 – 60 at Georgia State, Lost 69 – 66 vs. Towson at The DAC

Summary –

Saint Joseph’s 63 Drexel 49 – The Hawks took a 23 – 18 lead at halftime behind a 13 – 0 run that ended the first half.   Early in the second half Saint Joseph’s increased the led to 12 points.  Drexel mounted a comeback cutting the deficit to 41 – 36, but Saint Joe’s pulled away to get the win.  Damion Lee scored a game-high 21 points.  Darryl McCoy pulled down a game-best 12 rebounds.  The Dragons played without forward Dartaye Ruffin who was injured in practice during the week.

Drexel 77 Georgia State 60 – The Dragons opened conference play with a convincing 16 point win on the road.  The Dragons led 47 – 39 at halftime, and opened the second half with a 12 – 0 run to take control of the game.  Georgia State would get no closer than 14 points for the remainder of the game.  Frantz Massenat scored career-high 25 points.  Damion Lee added 15 points.  Daryl McCoy took down 14 rebounds, 11 in the second half.  McCoy has a total of 728 career rebounds good for 10th most in school history.  Drexel won its 17th straight CAA opening game which tied Richmond for the second longest streak in conference history.

Towson 69 Drexel 66 – The Dragons fell behind by 14 points at halftime, and in the second half trailed by 39 – 20 with 15:21 on the clock.  Then Drexel began their comeback getting to with 58 – 52 with just over three minutes remaining.  A Derrick Thomas three-pointer cut the deficit to three at the 22 second mark.  The Dragons had two chances to tie but three’s by Frantz Massenat were off the mark.  Massenat scored 17 points, 15 came in the first half.  Thomas netted 15 points.  Damion Lee scored 14 but was 3 – 11 from the floor.  Daryl McCoy pulled down 11 rebounds.
