Week of September 4 – 11, 2012 Games

Drexel Forward Jess Lowinger

DREXEL  5 – 1 – 1

Results – Won 1 – 0 vs. Penn at Vidas Field

Summary – Drexel is off the best start in school history returning from Hawaii to beat neighborhood rival Penn 1 – 0.  Jess Lowinger scored the lone goal for the Dragons.  For more on the story visit www.phillycollegesports.com – Drexel Wins The Women’s Soccer Battle of 33rd Street.

Drexel is ranked 7th in the Mid-Atlantic Region poll.  It is the first time the Dragons have been ranked regionally.

Next Game – at Temple 9/14

LA SALLE 3 – 3 – 0

Results – Won 6 – 2 vs. Seton Hall, Lost to Villanova 3 – 2 at the Villanova Classic

Summary – Kelsey Haycook  scored 3 goals and had an assist as LaSalle dominated Seton Hall winning 6 – 2 at the Villanova Classic.  The Explorers got goals from Renee Washington, Jessika Kegan, and Chrissy Vollrath.

In the second game of the Classic LaSalle jumped out to a 2 – 0 lead nine minutes into the game on goals by Haycook and Courtney Niemiec.  Villanova fought back to tie the game.  In the 80th minute Villanova’s Victoria Gersh, who scored twice in the game, put home the game winner off a rebound.

Haycook, Niemiec, and Washington were named to the All-Tournament team.

Next Game – at Loyola (Md.) 9/14

PENN  2 – 2 – 0

Results – Lost to Marist 2 – 0 at home, Lost at Drexel 1 – 0 at Vidas Field

Summary – Penn’s 15 game home winning streak came to an end as visiting Marist took home a 2 – 0 victory.  Jackie Frey and Maria Moreno scored the Marist goals.  Penn out-shot Marist 12 – 9 and had a 13 – 4 edge in Corner Kicks.

Next Game – at Cal Berkeley on 9/14 and at Sacramento State on 9/16

SAINT JOSEPH’S  3 – 3 – 1

Results – Lost at Princeton 3 – 0, Lost vs. Iona 1 – 0 at home

Summary –  Hawks Goal Keeper Christine Neal got a game-high 5 saves, but Princeton found the back of the net three times to win.  Jen Hoy, Jessica Lee, and Megan Gittins scored for the Tigers.

Saint Joseph’s returned home to face the Iona Gaels, and lost a heart breaker 1 – 0 as Iona scored with 44 seconds on the clock.  The Hawks put pressure on as Nicole King had 5 shots, but none went into the net.

Next Game – at Delaware 9/14

TEMPLE  2 – 4 – 1

Results – Won vs. Iona 1 – 0 at home, Lost 1 – 0 at Princeton

Summary – Morgyn Seigfried scored the lone goal of the game in the 19th minute as Temple defeated Iona 1 – 0.  Temple Goal Keeper Shauni Kerkhoff made her first collegiate start a memorable one recording a shutout and making s6 saves.

Kerkhoff played well in goal giving up one goal, but it was the only score of the game by Princeton’s Caitlyn Blosser giving Princeton the victory.  Kerkhoff recorded 6 saves.  The Owls were out-shot 18 – 5.

Next Game –  vs. Drexel  9/14 at Geasey Field

VILLANOVA  2 – 4 – 2

Results – Lost to William & Mary 1 – 0, Won vs. LaSalle 3 – 2 at the Villanova Classic

Summary – William & Mary scored the only goal of the game in the 80th minute on a shot by Cortlyn Bristol.  The Wildcats out-shot the Tribe 16 – 15 and had a 5 – 1 edge in Corner Kicks, but no goals.  Stephanie Myers put 2 shots on goal for Villanova.

In the second game of the Classic Victoria Gersh scored two goals including the game winner leading Villanova to a 3 – 2 win over LaSalle.  Down 2 – 0 at halftime Villanova scored three times in the second half with Kendra  Jones scoring the other goal.  Heidi Sabatura had 2 assists.

Gersh, Sabatura, and Taylor Houck were named to the All-Tournament Team.
