Penn Falls in Dramatic Fashion in Ivy League Semifinal

Yale Goes to Their Fourth Consecutive Ivy League Championship Game Defeating Penn 11 – 10

The University of Pennsylvania women’s lacrosse team loses to the Yale Bulldogs 11 – 10 in a heartbreaker at the Ivy League Tournament semifinal match at Princeton. The Eli will play top-seeded Princeton for the Ancient Eight title on Sunday. The Bulldogs got here scoring two-goals in the last 56 seconds to overcome the Quakers who lead for most of a defensive oriented game the forced both teams to work very hard to get quality chances. There were numerous scoreless stretches. It was the last minute that belonged to Yale who got goals from Jenna Collignon and the winner from Taylor Lane.

The Last Yale Run

Penn held a 10 – 9 lead and had the ball. The clock showed 1:22 in the fourth quarter when Eli midfielder Taylor Lane caused a turnover which led to the Collignon game-tying goal. Yale won the draw control, called timeout, and set up the critical possession. It resulted in a goal by Lane, her 30th over the season, at the 13.3 second mark. Collignon picked up the assist. The Bulldogs won the draw control to end any Penn chance.

The Penn Run

The Red and Blue put themselves in position to win the contest. Surrounding halftime Penn got a free-position goal a second before halftime by midfielder Anna Brandt. It was her 48th goal of this season and gave the Quakers a 5 – 4 lead. Brandt figured in the next Quakers score stealing a pass and started a fast break toward the offensive zone. The possession culminated with a goal by midfielder Gracie Smith 11:57 into the third quarter.

Penn attacker Keeley Block scored twice to give her team an 8 – 5 lead in the third quarter, the largest margin of the contest.

Yale Responds

Lane and Collignon combined for back to back goals to cut the deficit to one-goal. The teams traded scores to even the contest. The Eli combo by Sky Carrasquillo and Fallon Vaughn came within 34 seconds of one another. With 6:32 to play in the fourth quarter Patricia Columbia-Walsh scored a free-position goal to give Penn a 10 – 9 lead. Neither team would score until the last minute pair by Yale.

What the Numbers Say

Lane scored a game-high 4 goals. Collignon added 3 scores and an assist. Yale outshot Penn 32 – 22, with 22 shots going on goal. The Bulldogs turned the ball over 10 times compared to 13, and had a 15 – 9 advantage in draw controls.

Block found the back of the net three times for Penn. Brandt, Columbia-Walsh, and Smith recorded a pair of goals. Quakers goal keeper Orly Sedransk saved 11 saves.

Penn finishes the year with a 10 – 6 record. The Quakers have some quality wins and should be in the conversation for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Yale (13 – 3), the second-seed, will face number-one Princeton for the championship and the automatic bid to the tournament on Sunday.
