Villanova 14 New Hampshire 6
Credit this game to the defense. While the Villanova offense was held even, the defense rose up and stopped the New Hampshire offense twice on goal line stands.
Near halftime and Nova leading 7 – 3, New Hampshire drove to the one-yard line. On fourth down New Hampshire quarterback Barry Kleinpeter took the ball up the middle, but was met by linebacker Shane Hartzell and defensive back Jalen Goodman stopping him to end the scoring threat with 3:26 on the clock.
The second stand came in the fourth quarter. Villanova still held the same advantage. New Hampshire had the ball at the Nova three-yard line. On fourth-and three Kleinpeter took the snap and got as far as the one-yard line, but defensive back Isas Waxter let him go no further. Villanova took over on downs.
The offense put the game away going on a 9-play, 99-yard drive taking 5:24 capped by a 19-yard touchdown pass from Connor Watkins to Devin Smith with 8:21 to play. New Hampshire could only add a field goal to their scoring column.
Hartzell made a career-high 20 tackles.
Villanova (6 – 2, 3 – 1) travels to Hampton next Saturday.
Yale 31 Penn 10
Under Friday night lights the stage was set in the initial segment of the game.
On the first possession of the game Yale had a third-and-two at the Penn 40. Quarterback Grant Jordan sent a pass down field that hit the back of Penn defensive back Shiloh Means, then landed in the lap of Yale wide receiver David Pantellis at the 9-yard line. Pantellis caught a touchdown pass two plays later. On the ensuing drive the University of Pennsylvania lost the ball on a fumble and quarterback Aidan Sayin who hurt his elbow on that play. The Eli scored a touchdown after that turnover.
Liam O’Brien took over at quarterback and guided Penn to their only touchdown 43 seconds before halftime to cut the deficit to 21 – 10. Later, freshman Karson Siqueiros-Lasky took over the signal caller position.
Penn (2 – 4) sits at the bottom of the Ivy League standings at 0 – 3. The next chance comes on Saturday at Brown.
ECU 56 Temple 34
The Owls tried to extend their winning streak to two games and post their first road win. That will not happen by giving up the most points in a single-game this season, giving up over 200-yards on the ground, and turning the ball over. Temple did all three and lost.
The game got away from the Cherry and White in the third quarter by giving up 29 points. That quarter saw ECU score four touchdowns. Three back-to-back-to-back within less than a minute and a half. Marlon Gunn, Jr. ran it in from 5-yards out at 5:01, followed by a 55-yard pick-six by Ja’Marley Riddle, then culminated with a 16-yard touchdown catch by Yannick Smith. That play ended a 34-second drive.
A win was a possibility near halftime as the Owls trailed 21 – 20, but the Pirates answered with a 45-yard touchdown pass from Katin Houser to Chase Sowell.
The Pirates ran for 231 yards led by Rahal Harris with 130 yards rushing. Houser threw for 269 yards with 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Sowell added 117 receiving yards. ECU put up 500 yards of total offense.
For Temple quarterback Evan Simon completed 23 of 41 passes for 231 yards and 3 scores. But he was intercepted three times as well. Ashton Allen caught 4 passes for 109 yards, and two were touchdown catches. Torrez Worthy posted 88 rushing yards.
Temple (2 – 6) has a bye week. Their second of two.
