Temple Falls 42 – 14 in Thursday Night Football
September 27, 2024 –
The Temple Owls knew what to expect from Army. A running game the Black Nights would use, be efficient in their drives, and mix in an occasional pass play. Knowing it is one thing, stopping it is another. The Owls could not do that and lost 42 – 14 at the Linc in an American Conference game. Temple could not extend their winning streak while Army improves to 4 – 0 on the season.
The Running Game
On offense the Cadets ran 63 plays and 57 of those were rushes for 417 yards averaging 7.3 per play. Of the six touchdowns scored five came on a running play with the longest, a 61-yard run by Noah Short to open the scoring. Quarterback Bryson Daily ran for 152 yards on 14 attempts scoring 3 times. Running back Kayne Udoh added 128 rushing yards and a score. The Black Knights threw for 72 yards completing 3 of 6 passes. Daily went 2 for 5. Dewayne Coleman threw once and made it count finding Carn Shurr for an 18-yard touchdown.
Army did not have a play that lost yardage this year until Temple ended that streak with 3 tackles for a loss by Jamel Johnson, Jaylen Lewis, Sekou Kromah.
Army Efficiency
The Black Knights visited the Temple Red Zone on five occasions and scored four touchdowns on those visits. Except for the first touchdown, a 3-play drive taking 1:32, the Army touchdown drives totaled 40 total plays, and the times ranged from 8:29 to 3:43.
When the Owls did score, back to back late in the third and early in the fourth, the Black Knights answered with a 6-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 12-yard scoring run by Daily.
Soldiers on Defense
Army did not record a sack coming into this game. That changed as Temple quarterback Evan Simon was dropped 7 times by seven different Army players. The Owls lost 37 yards on sacks. Simon did not get much time to find and open receiver. He did complete 19 of 31 passes for 224 yards, 54 on one play, and was intercepted once. Temple attempted to run the ball on 22 plays and gained a meager 32 yards. The net loss yardage due to sacks caused the Owls to have a minus-5 yards on the ground. It caused the offense by the Cherry and White to be one dimensional. On offense the Owls gained 219 total yards.
Temple Misses on an Opportunity
On the first possession it appeared that the Owls took a lead. It was a 49-yard completion and touchdown from Simon to Antonio Jones. The Cherry and White could have been playing from ahead which may have changed the complexion of the game. But a holding penalty negated the play. Temple punted and Army scored three plays later to get the initial score. Another mistake that hurt the Owls chances.
What the Numbers Say
Dante Wright was the focal point of the Temple offense. He was targeted 11 times catching 8 passes for 98 yards and a touchdown. Nine Owls caught passes featured by tight end Daniel Evert who scored on a 54-yard catch and run taking advantage of being completely wide open on the play. His touchdown cut the deficit to 28 – 14 with 11:19 remaining in the fourth quarter. Army answered right back. Evert has three receptions this season, two of which are for touchdowns.
Linebacker Tyquan King led the Temple defense with 14 tackles, 9 of the solo variety. This is the second consecutive game in which he has recorded double-digits in stops.
