Philly D1 Women’s Soccer Weekly Wrap – Games of September 19 – 25

September 26, 2022 –

Drexel Unbeaten in 10 Games, One of 13 Undefeated Teams in NCAA Division 1, Villanova Gets Initial Big East Win

The Drexel Dragons won a pair of 3 – 2 games against the College of Charleston and UNCW in the CAA. The Dragons have 7 wins and 3 draws, and ties the second longest unbeaten streak in program history. Kylie Kutz scored the game winner in South Carolina at the 49:30 mark. Casey Touey scored the golden goal in the 89th minute to down UNCW….The Villanova Wildcats posted a win in the Big East defeating Seton Hall 2 – 0. The Cats are on a two-game winning streak. Lauren Ashman had a goal and an assist….The La Salle Explorers split their Atlantic 10 week defeating GWU at home, but lost at VCU. In the win La Salle got a goal from Haley Gschrey at 82:20 to hand GWU their first loss. The VCU Rams got a goal on a penalty kick in the 25th minute for the only score of the game….Fellow Atlantic 10 member the Saint Joseph’s Hawks played to 2 draws, 1-all vs. UMass and a scoreless tie at Rhode Island. The Hawks have 6 ties in their last 7 games. At this time SJU is 0 – 0 – 4 in the league with each draw in consecutive games….The University of Pennsylvania opened their Ivy League schedule with a tie against #16 Harvard. Penn has 6 ties this season to set a program record….The Temple Owls played two games at home falling in both. #21 SMU got a 1 – 0 AAC victory getting a goal in the 13th minute. Temple hosted Gonzaga later in the week in the first meeting between these schools. Gonzaga went back west with a 4 – 1 win. Roisin McGovern scored for the Owls in the 84th minute.

It’s league play for the Philly teams. At home Drexel meets Towson, La Salle plays Duquesne, Saint Joseph’s hosts Fordham, Temple has a match with LIU in their last non-conference game, and Villanova plays Xavier on the pitch on the Main Line. Penn takes a trip to Upstate New York for a game against Cornell.

Games of September 19 – 25, 2022

DREXEL 7 – 0 – 3 Overall, 2 – 0 – 0 CAA

Results – Won 3 – 2 at the College of Charleston, Won 3 – 2 at UNCW

Summary – Drexel trailed for the first time at UNCW. The Dragons got goals from Lily Dunbar and Annalena O’Reilly to set up the winner by Kutz. O’Reilly, who has 5 goals this season, and Anna Salvucci added tallies in Charleston.

Next Game – September29 vs. Towson at Vidas Field

LA SALLE 6 – 5 – 0 Overall, 1 – 3 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 2 – 1 vs. George Washington University, Lost 1 – 0 at VCU

Summary – Goalie Michela Auguardo made a total of 14 saves, 9 stops against the GW Colonials. The Explorers capitalized on an ‘own goal’ in that game. VCU held a 16 – 8 edge in shots, 6 – 4 on goal in Richmond.

Next Game – October 2 at Duquesne

PENN –2 – 1 – 6 Overall, 0 – 0 – 1 Ivy League

Results– Tied 1 – 1 vs. #16 Harvard

Summary – Sara Readinger scored on a header in the 58th minute for the Quakers. Goalie Laurence Gladu saved four shots, one shy of her career-high.

Next Game – October 1 at Cornell

SAINT JOSEPH’S  1 – 5 – 6 Overall, 0 – 0 – 4 Atlantic 10

Results – Tied 1 – 1 vs. UMass, Tied 0 – 0 at Rhode Island

Summary – Natalie Nevins scored her third goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute against UMass. At URI goalie Katie Cappelletti made 4 saves for her 12th career clean slate.

Next Game – September 29 vs. Fordham at Sweeney Field

TEMPLE 0 – 5 – 4 Overall, 0 – 2 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 1 – 0 vs. # 21 SMU, Lost 4 – 1 vs. Gonzaga

Summary – Goalie Kayla Burns saved 5 Mustangs shots. Gonzaga got the scoring started in the 9th minute and never looked back. The shots were in favor of the visitors 16 – 6, and 8 – 4 on goal.

Next Game – October 1 vs. LIU at The Temple Sports Complex

VILLANOVA 2 – 3 – 2 Overall, 1 – 0 – 0

Results – Won 2 – 0 at Seton Hall

Summary – Makayla Stadler got the scoring started against The Hall in the 10th minute. Megan McClay made 6 saves to get the shutout.
