The Fraud Five by Mike Kern – Week Eight

Mike Kern’s Fraud Five

October 20, 2024

And is the season really more than half over already?

Texas — Hard to fault anyone for ever losing to Georgia, which almost never loses to anyone not named Alabama. Yet Longhorns were home in prime time, ranked No. 1 and favored by 5. Then they fell behind 23-0 before eventually going down 30-15. It happens. And despite the fact that I took the Dawgs, it wasn’t supposed to happen quite like this.

Nebraska — Everyone knows I’m a big Matt Rhule guy. But his Huskers can’t be losing 56-7 at Indiana. Even if the unbeaten Hoosiers are off to their best start since 1967. And now Nebraska gets to go to Ohio State.

Oklahoma — Maybe the Sooners just aren’t any good. Still, they lost at home to South Carolina, 35-9, in what was basically a pick-em game. The Gamecocks scored two defensive touchdowns in the first six minutes. Good thing they only scored three points in the second half.

James Madison — The Dukes, who scored 70 at North Carolina, were 10-point favorites at Georgia Southern, which isn’t bad. They lost, 28-14, after falling behind 21-0. Good thing they scored last.

Cal — Was favored by 10 over visiting North Carolina State, in another one of those traditional ACC matchups. The Bears lost, 24-23. The Wolfpack scored the last 14 points, in the final 11 minutes.

Dishonorable Mention

Arizona — It’s OK to lose to resurgent Colorado, even at home despite being a slight fave. But maybe it shouldn’t be by 34-7. Wildcats got outscored 20-0 after the first quarter.
