Saint Joseph’s Falls to Monmouth in Battle of the Hawks

Two Second Half Goals Propel Monmouth Past Saint Joe’s

September 27, 2022 –

Either way the Hawks would win or tie. It just depended upon which one. We’ll end the suspense. The Monmouth Hawks visited Sweeney Field and upended the Saint Joseph’s Hawks 2 – 0 in a non-league men’s soccer match. It is the second consecutive loss for Saint Joe’s who gave up two goals in the last 15 minutes. Prior to the game there was a celebration for the SJU Seniors.

The game was a defensive battle for most part. SJU had the first three shots, then the game settled down. After halftime Monmouth finally broke through in the 75th minute off a header by Chris Morandi. Just under eleven minutes later forward Ben Zakowski scored for the final margin of victory. Zakowski assisted on the Morandi goal.

Monmouth outshot Saint Joseph’s 18 – 8 and 8 – 4 in shots on goal. SJU goalie Lars Haavic saved 6 shots. In his previous start he saved 7.

Forward James Fletcher led Saint Joe’s with 3 shots, one on net. Fellow forward Ariel Hadar sent 2 shots away, one was saved.

Zakowski had a game-high 5 shots, four on goal. Morandi let 3 shots go, two on net.

Saint Joe’s returns to Sweeney Field for an Atlantic 10 game against Davidson on Saturday. The Wildcats are 1 – 1 in league play. The Hawks drop to 1 – 4 – 4. SJU is 0 – 1 – 1 in the A10.
