The Fraud Five by Mike Kern – Week Six

Mike Kern’s Fraud Five

October 6, 2024

In a week where four Top Ten team fell, Miami had to rally from a 25 point second half hole to keep Cal from making it a handful. And how about the last play of the Temple – UConn game. Ugh! So away we go.

Alabama — You have to ask why? Has any team had a win like last week’s against Georgia followed by a loss like this one? The newly top-ranked Tide never led in a 40-35 loss at Vanderbilt. As a more than three touchdown favorite. The Commodores hadn’t beaten Alabama since 1984, and had never beaten a Top Five opponent. Now they’re 1-61.

Tennessee — Speaking of big-time upsets in the SEC, No. 4 Tennessee was favored by 14 at Arkansas. The Vols went down, 19-14, on a late TD. Good thing they led 14-3 midway through the third period. Hey, they did get to the Hogs’ 25 with 17 seconds remaining. But four plays gained nine yards. It happens, even if it shouldn’t.

Missouri — Tigers were ranked ninth, at No. 25 Texas A&M. They lost, 41-10. It was 34-0 midway through the third quarter. Good thing they decided, for whatever reason, to kick a 23-yard field goal with 8 seconds to go. Huh?

Southern Cal — Sorry, but probably shouldn’t be losing at Minnesota, 24-17. Or maybe it’s just me. It sometimes is. Minny scored the final 14 points, on two TDs in the closing seven minutes.

Oklahoma State — Repeat offender. The Cowboys were slight faves at home, but lost to West Virginia, 38-14. It was their third straight loss, for a team that was supposed to contend for the Big 12 title. Guess not.

Dishonorable Mentions

TCU — Lost at home to Houston, 30-19. As 16-point faves. The same Houston that had been shut out in its previous two games, and had only scored more than 12 points once all season.

East Carolina — The Pirates were 9-point faves at Charlotte. They lost, 55-24. Good thing they scored the last TD, with 10 minutes left.
