Villanova and Penn Record A Win Over the Week
The Villanova Wildcats went 1 – 1 over the week. Lyam MacKinnon returned to the team from injury and scored twice in the 4 – 0 win over Northwestern. It was the first victory of the season for Nova. On Sunday the Wildcats outshot the Eli 14 – 7 and 7 – 2 on goal, but could not get one past Yale goalie Elian Haddock in a 1 -0 loss. Yale got the game winner in the 77th minute …. The Drexel Dragons got their first road points in the CAA with a 1 – 1 draw at Northeastern. Both the Dragons and the Huskies have 4 points in the standings. Both scores in the game were in the last 15 minutes of play. That followed a 2 – 0 home loss to Lafayette…. The University of Pennsylvania Quakers played three times over the week and posted an even week with a win, loss, and a tie. Penn tied city rival Temple at 1-each, then travelled to New York to face Albany and Colgate. The Red and Blue lost 1 – 0 at Albany, then followed that with a 4 – 1 victory over Colgate behind a hat trick and 7-point performance by Stas Korzeniowski. It was the first hat trick for a Penn player since 2017…. The other city teams all went 0 – 1 – 1 over the week…. The La Salle Explorers played Lehigh to a 2 – 2 draw before dropping a 1 – 0 decision at home to NJIT giving up an own goal….. The Temple Owls hosted in Penn in a Soccer Six game. The Owls went ahead 1 – 0 on a goal by Mike Eijgendaal before being tied in the 60th minute. The Cherry and White got the first goal at Lafayette when Fabian Grant scored his first in the 34th minute. But the Leopards answered with two scores before halftime…. The Saint Joseph’s Hawks were ready to get win number one when James Fletcher scored against Delaware in the 59th minute. But the Blue Hens tied it just over four minutes later. Saint Joe’s ended the week with a 2 – 0 loss at Cornell who posted two goals within 21 seconds of one another in the 59th minute.
The upcoming week sees more city play as Drexel hosts Saint Joseph’s. La Salle has a road game at Virginia. Penn heads to Mount Saint Mary’s. Temple is home to play Saint Peter’s. Villanova hosts NJIT.

DREXEL 2 – 1 – 2 Overall, 1 – 0 – 1 CAA
Results – Lost 2 – 0 vs. Lafayette, Tied 1 – 1 at Northeastern
Summary – The Leopards had 12 shots to 9 for the Dragons. In the second half Drexel had 8 shots and all 4 of their shots on goal. Antonio Illuminato scored his first goal in Boston at 75:20 on a penalty kick.
Next Game – September 13 vs. Saint Joseph’s at Vidas Field
LA SALLE 1 – 2 – 2 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10
Results – Tied 2 – 2 at Lehigh, Lost 1 – 0 vs. NJIT
Summary – The Explorers kept coming from behind to tie the Mountain Hawks. The tying goal came off the foot of Nigel Buckley in the 73rd minute as La Salle was down a player. Giammarco Rubio scored his first goal. Statistically speaking, the game with NJIT was close in shots as team had 10 each. But a closer look revealed NJIT had an 8 – 1 edge in the first half. LSU turned it around having a 9 – 2 shot advantage in the second half.

PENN – 2 – 1 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Ivy League
Results– Tied 1 – 1 at Temple, Lost 1 – 0 at Albany, Won 4 – 1 at Colgate
Summary – The Quakers were the visiting team in all three games. The first was a trip up to North Broad Street to play a city game with Temple. The tying goal for the Red and Blue came in the 60th minute by Nick Schimbeno, his first. Heading up the Hudson River to Albany Dominic Baumann scored on a penalty kick to down Penn who outshot the Great Danes 21 – 4 and had a 16 – 1 advantage in corner kicks.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 0 – 2 – 2 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10
Results – Tied 1 – 1 at Delaware, Lost 2 – 0 vs. Cornell
Summary – Until the Cornell game no more than one goal was scored by each team in the previous three games in which the Hawks played. SJU did not register a shot on goal against the Big Red and were outshot 21 – 5.
Next Game – September 13 at Drexel
TEMPLE 1 – 2 – 2 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 AAC
Results – Tied 1 – 1 vs. Penn, Lost 3 – 1 at Lafayette
Summary – Temple goalies Eoin Gawronski and Micah Ramirez (playing his first career game) combined for 8 saves against Penn. Gawronski had 5 saves. At Lafayette the Owls went ahead early, but to quick goals before halftime by Marcos Kitromilides gave the advantage back to the Leopards.
Next Game – September 14 vs. Saint Peter’s at the Temple Sports Complex
VILLANOVA 1 – 2 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Big East
Results – Won 4 – 0 vs. Northwestern, Lost 1 – 0 at Yale
Summary – Awujo Akinjide and Jorge Garcia also scored goals in the home win over the Northwestern Wildcats. Goalie Kent Dickey recorded his first shutout of the season.
