Villanova Men’s Soccer Season Ends With a Loss to Notre Dame

Wildcats Fall 3 – 0 to Fighting Irish in NCAA’s in South Bend

The season comes to an end for the Villanova men’s soccer team as the #4 Notre Dame Fighting Irish win 3 – 0 in the second round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championships.

Notre Dame got on the scoreboard first in the 18th minute when Jack Lynn scored the initial goal of the game assisted by Paddy Burns. In the 36th minute of play Burns scored to give ND a 2 – 0 lead they took into halftime. Late in the game playing a man-up Ben Giacobello got the final goal of the game in the 85th minute.

The Irish had a 15 – 9 edge in shots with an 8 – 3 advantage in shots on goal. Wildcats goalie Carson Williams saved five of those shots. Nova midfielder Lyam MacKinnon led the team in shots with 4, one was on goal. Jorge Garcia and Seidu Shamsudeen took the other shots that ND goalie Bryan Dowd needed to save.

Villanova finishes with a record of 12 – 8 – 1. The Cats started the season winning five of the first six games. The Wildcats got an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning over Creighton in the Big East Tournament quarterfinal round, then lost to league champion Georgetown in the last 26 seconds in the semifinals.

Playing in their second NCAA Tournament the Wildcats got the first win in program history defeating Vermont 1 – 0 in the opening round. The twelve wins ties the all-time record for wins in a season.
