Drexel Wins Behind 3 Goals by Chris Donovan and Posts a Shutout on Senior Day, Penn Plays to a Draw in New York. Villanova Winning Streak Ends

The Drexel Dragons won their game of the week beating UMass, Lowell on Senior Day 4 – 0. Chris Donovan scored 3 goals. He leads the team in goals (8) and points (18). The University of Pennsylvania Quakers travelled to upper Manhattan for an Ivy League game against Columbia. Penn came home with a 1 – 1 draw. Stan Korzeniowski scored the goal for the Red and Blue in the 73rd minute. Three schools split their weekend slate. The Villanova Wildcats won 1 – 0 at UConn to set a program best fourth consecutive Big East victory. Lyam MacKinnon got the game winner on a penalty kick in the 103rd minute. The streak came to an end when St. John’s defeated Villanova 1 – 0 on a Lucas Bartlett penalty kick in the 92nd minute. It was the first conference loss for the Wildcats. The Saint Joseph’s Hawks played two tough Atlantic 10 games. The Hawks fell 3 – 2 in overtime against the 14th ranked Saint Louis Billikens when Chandler Vaughn got the game winner in the 101st minute. The Billikens took a lead and the Hawks would tie it until the goal late in the first overtime. Saint Joe’s bounced back with a 1 – 0 win at St. Bonaventure. Garrett Lyons put in the game winner in the 59th minute. Goalie Lars Haavie recorded his first win and shutout in Olean. The Temple Owls found themselves involved in two shutouts over the two game homestand. The Owls were on the good side beating Princeton 2 – 0. They were on the wrong side dropping a 3- 0 decision in an American game against USF, who scored 2 first half goals. The La Salle Explorers lost an Atlantic 10 home game 4 – 2 to the Davidson Wildcats. Omari Cotterell scored both goals for the Explorers, his first of the season. It was a tight game until the Wildcats broke it open with back-to-back second half goals within 8 minutes of one another.

In a city game and a Battle of 33rd Street Drexel and Penn meet at Rhodes Field. Villanova continues Big East play hosting Creighton. Coming to town will be Howard who plays La Salle in a non-conference game. Saint Joseph’s is out of conference playing at Lafayette. Temple has an American at Tulsa.

Games of October 3 – October 10, 2021

DREXEL 5 – 4 – 1 Overall, 2 – 1 – 1 CAA

Results – Won 4 – 0 vs. UMass, Lowell

Summary – Drexel had 6 shots, 4 on goal. Yassine Elkahoun also found the back of the net for the Dragons.

Next Game – October 12 at Penn

LA SALLE 3 – 8 – 0 Overall, 0 – 4 – 0 Atlantic 10                                                                                                                                       

Results – Lost 4 – 2 vs. Davidson

Summary – The game had each team with 9 shots on goal. Junior Nare led the Explorers with 6 shots, 4 that forced a save.

Next Game – October 12 vs. Howard at McCarthy Stadium

PENN – 4 – 3 – 2 Overall, 0 – 1 – 1 Ivy League      

Results– Tied (2 OT) at Columbia

Summary – The Quakers outshot the Lions 11 – 9, 5 – 2 on goal. Joey Bhangdia got the assist. Penn is looking for their first win in the Ancient Eight.

Next Game – October 12 vs. Drexel at Rhodes Field

SAINT JOSEPH’S  5 – 8 – 0 Overall, 3 – 2 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 3 – 2 (OT) vs. #14 Saint Louis, Won 1 – 0 at St. Bonaventure

Summary – Bryce Wallace and Omry Perel scored for the Hawks against the Billikens. Perel also recorded an assist. Goalie Lars Haavie made 5 saves.

Next Game – October 12 at Lafayette

TEMPLE 2 – 6 – 2 Overall, 0 – 5 – 0 AAC

Results – Won 2 – 0 vs. Princeton, Lost 3 – 0 vs. USF

Summary – Chaim Roserie and Jalen Campbell put the ball over the line in the second half. It was the first goal of the season for each player. Goalie Liam Cummings made 7 saves in getting his first shutout over the Tigers. Temple is looking for their first AAC win of the season.

Next Game – October 16 at Tulsa

VILLANOVA 8– 3 – 0 Overall, 4 – 1 – 0 Big East

Results – Won 1 – 0 (OT) at Connecticut, Lost 1 – 0 vs. St. John’s at the Higgins Soccer Complex

Summary – The Wildcats found themselves on both sides of a 1 – 0 game, both games were decided by a penalty kick.
