Temple Wins – Earns Third Seed in American Men’s Soccer Tournament

The Temple Owls finish the regular season in men’s soccer with a 2 – 1 overtime road win over SMU. With the victory the Owls earn the the third seed in the upcoming American Athletic Association tournament where they will meet the second seeded Tulsa Golden Hurricane in the Thursday semifinal in Orlando. Owls forward Mike Eijgendaal scored the game winner 2:20 into the extra period.

This game would decide who would be the third seed, win and you get it. Lose, and be the fourth seed. The Mustangs are the four-seed and play league regular season champion UCF Knights.

The game was scoreless until the 84:24 mark. Owls midfielder Amir Cohen scored on a penalty kick. The lead would hold for just two and a half minutes. Mustangs midfielder Skage Simonsen found the back of the net to tie the game at one with just over three minutes left in regulation. SMU had two more shots before the game went into overtime.

In the first two-plus minutes in the extra stanza Temple got a corner kick. A shot by Cohen was saved, but Eijgendaal put the ball home to end it, his fourth goal of the season.

SMU had a 22 – 9 edge in shots and 9 – 6 in shots on goal. Temple goal keeper Eoin Gawronski saved 8 of those shots. Forward Nigel Griffith and Cohen each had 3 shots 2 of which forced SMU goalie Cole Johnson to make a save. He had 4 saves over the course of the game. For the Mustangs Simonsen registered 6 shots, 3 on goal.

The Owls post a 5 – 5 – 1 record for the season.
