Temple and Saint Joseph’s Downed in Rugby Competition

CHESTER, PA. 6/2/2019 – Day two ended in the morning for both the Saint Joseph’s Hawks and the Temple Owls in the Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship at Talen Energy Stadium. The Owls and the Hawks lost their opening round games to complete their competition.

The Cherry and White played in for the Bowl. The Crimson and Gray were in the Plate round. After the first day of competition each team is grouped into the Cup Division which is for the top eight teams. The next group of eight are in the Plate Division, and the remaining teams compete for the Bowl.

Temple started the day with a match against the University of Colorado. Each team was looking for their first win. Temple posted a two tries, but gave up four in a 24 – 12 defeat. It was the highest point total for Temple in their four games.

Saint Joseph’s came into the tournament looking to advance to the Cup Round. That did not happen, so they played for the Plate. The Hawks fell behind early by a 10 – 0 score to the Hokies of Virginia Tech. Jonathan Ahern answered twice, but SJU never got the lead and were defeated 22 – 14.

“I’m happy with the boys,” said Hawks Coach Dan Yarusso. “The results didn’t go our way, but I’m proud of them. It was not our tournament this weekend.”
