Saint Joseph’s Wins CRC Rugby Championships Opener Against Navy

CHESTER, PA. 6/3/2017 – The Saint Joseph’s Hawks began pool play in the Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championships against the US Naval Academy at Talen Energy Stadium in Chester.  In a closely contested battle SJU prevailed by a score of 17 – 10 led by Greg McTiernan who had two tries.

Extra points mean a lot.  The Hawks got one which kept the Midshipmen behind.  With just the 50 seconds left to play McTiernan scored to give the Hawks the final margin of victory.

Navy got the first score of the game at the 6:09 mark on a try Connor McNerney.  The Hawks got the next two prior to intermission. McTiernan tied the game, then Jimmy Wolfer gave SJU the lead they would hold.  He ran up the left side.  With one defender to beat Wolfer kicked the ball past the Navy defender, ran it down and crossed the goal line.  Wolfer converted the only extra point of the game and the Hawks led 12 – 5.

Jake Martin got the Midshipmen to within two on a try at the 4:43 mark, the last points before McTiernan’s decisive score.

Saint Joseph’s continues pool play against Army, then Lindenwood on Saturday.
