I’d like to add my name to those who have suggested that Fran Dunphy should be inducted into the Big 5 Hall of Fame. In fact, it’s an honor that is long over-due. Since he has now become the winningest coach in Big 5 history just adds to his impressive resume. He’s been involved with the Big 5 since his playing days at La Salle, and is now in his 9th season with Temple after 17 years at Penn. He has won multiple league championships, and his teams have been in numerous post-season tournaments. And, just as important, he is highly respected by the basketball community, not just locally, but all over the country. To wait until he retires from coaching makes no sense. If a candidate is qualified enough to be a member of the Hall of Fame, then make the induction. Fran Dunphy is much more than just qualified.

And then there is Sgt. Frank Martin, the jovial head man at South Carolina, who is as scarier than ever. And how would you like to have been a player, at practice, the next day (or maybe that night) after his Gamecocks lost by 27, at home, against Kentucky? He makes Bob Knight look like Mr. Rogers.

There are three NBA players having good seasons that just might be of interest to the Sixers. Nik Vucevic is averaging 17 points and 9 rebounds for Orlando; Thaddeus Young is at 15 and 9 for the Nets, and Jrue Holiday has 15 points per game and 5.5 assists for New Orleans.
Just sayin’.

This and That: Big time hoops in the city tonight. At 6 O’clock St.Joe’s hosts # 15 Dayton where a win will vault the Hawks into the top 25. At 7, in a game that has created great interest, top-ranked Villanova visits Temple before a packed house. Upset? Unlikely, but it’s a Big 5 game, so don’t be shocked….After Ish Smith makes a 3-pointer I’d like to hear Tom McGinnis say, very quickly, “Swish, Ish, Smith.”….There should be a contest involving those kids who race out with the chairs during timeouts. Right now Duke seems to be the fastest….GW is known for its International Studies Program. That would explain three regulars being Patricio Garino (Argentina), Yuta Watanabe (Japan), and Kevin Larsen (Denmark)….Upcoming: La Salle, which has gone 1-17 since its 4-1 start, welcomes St. Bonaventure tonight; Drexel, hoping to snap a 10-game losing streak hosts Elon tomorrow night; Penn, winner in 3 of its last 4, has Brown and Yale at the Palestra over the weekend.
Answer to Trivia Time: Duke All-American J.J Redick connected for 457 shots from beyond the arc.
