Villanova and Temple Share Soccer Six Title, Sean Sheridan Named Player Of The Week
Week of September 30 – October 5, 2015
DREXEL 2 – 8 – 1 Overall, 1 – 3 – 0 CAA
Results – Lost 5 – 1 vs. #23 Hofstra, Lost 1 – 0 vs. College of Charleston both at Vidas Field
Summary – The Dragons were defeated in both games of the week falling against nationally ranked Hofstra and The College of Charleston. Drexel took a 1- 0 lead against Hofstra, but gave up the next five. The Drexel goal was scored by Erik Alexandersson. The Pride put pressure on the Dragons goal forcing keeper Jacob Jordan to make a career-high 13 saves. Tyler Afflerbach returned to the nets against the Cougars in the following contest and made 6 saves. Offensively, Drexel had 17 shots, but none crossed the goal line.
Next Game – 10/6 vs. Columbia at Vidas Field
LA SALLE 4 – 6 – 1 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 Atlantic 10
Results – Lost 2 – 0 vs. Villanova at McCarthy Stadium, lost 3 – 0 at Fordham
Summary – The Explorers were shutout in both contests. La Salle had 15 shots against Villanova, but only 4 on goal. The Explorers opened the Atlantic 10 portion of their schedule on the road against the defending league champions.
Next Game – 10/7 vs. Duquesne at McCarthy Stadium
PENN – 2 – 5 – 1 Overall, 1 – 0 – 0 Ivy League
Results – Won 2 – 0 vs. Cornell at Rhodes Field
Summary – The Red and Blue have won two in a row, and their Ivy opener. Sophomore Joe Swenson scored two goals in his first Ivy League match. Goal keeper Nick Savino registered another shutout making two saves against the Big Red earning him the Philadelphia Soccer Six Defensive Player of the Week honors.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 3 –7 – 1 Overall, 1 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10
Results – Won 2 – 0 vs. Massachusetts at Sweeney Field
Summary – The Hawks kicked off their Atlantic 10 season with a 2 – 0 shutout win over Massachusetts. Saint Joe’s has won three of their last four games over the home stand. Matt Crawford scored what became the game winning shot early in the first half. It was the second of the season for Crawford. Derek MacKinnon scored his first collegiate goal in the 50th minute to end the scoring. MacKinnon was named the Soccer Six Rookie of the Week. Goal keeper Bobby Edwards made three saves, all in the first half.

#17 TEMPLE 7 – 2 – 2 Overall, 0 – 2 – 0 AAC
Results – Tied 0 – 0 (2 OT) at Delaware, Lost 1 – 0 vs. #17 USF at the Villanova Higgins Soccer Complex
Summary – The Owls did not find the back of the net as they got a tie and a loss over the week. The double overtime tie against Delaware was played in a driving rain storm that made it difficult for either team to score. USF got their goal in the 14th minute of the game. Goalie Alex Cagle made 9 saves over the two games.

VILLANOVA 6 – 4 – 0 Overall, 1 – 1 – 0 Big East
Results – Won 2 – 0 at La Salle, Won 2 – 1 vs. Marquette at the Higgins Soccer Complex, Lost 2 – 0 at #13 Maryland
Summary – Sean Sheridan scored two game winning goals over the week to propel the Wildcats to two wins. His goal against La Salle in the 66th minute turned out to be the game winner. Colton Bryant had the other goal in the Soccer Six contest. The win allowed Villanova to claim a share of the Soccer Six crown. Against Marquette Sheridan put one onto the back of the net in the 78th minute to get the win. It was the first conference win of the season for Villanova. The Wildcats closed out the week in review with a 2 – 0 loss to #13 Maryland at College Park. For his efforts Sheridan was named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Player of the Week. Sheridan has 4 goals and 2 assists for 10 points which ranks him number three in Soccer Six scoring.
