Maryam Huseini Sets La Salle Assists Record, Postseason; Drexel 5th Seed In CAA, Temple 8th Seed In AAC, Villanova Clinches Big East Postseason Berth

Games The Week of October 22 – 28, 2014

DREXEL DRAGONS 7 – 8 – 3 Overall, 4 – 3 –2 CAA

Results – Lost 2 -1 at Hofstra, Lost 1 – 0 at Northeastern

Summary –

Hofstra 2 Drexel 1 – Just less than 10 minutes into the second half Hofstra took a 2 goal lead off a header by Leah Galton.  Less than a minute later Megan Hammaker scored for the Dragons, her fifth of the season, but that would be as close as the Dragons would get.  Hofstra outshot Drexel 19 – 10.  Dragons goal keeper Kelsie Fye made 4 saves.

Northeastern 1 Drexel 0 – A goal in the 61st minute by Kayla Cappuzzo for the Huskies proved to be the difference in the game.  The Dragons got three chances in the remaining time, two by Lauren Stollar and one by Melissa Chapman, but the shots went wide.

Drexel will be the 5th seed in the CAA Tournament.  They will travel to the 4th seed William & Mary in the Quarterfinal round.

Next Game – 11/2 at William & Mary in CAA Quarterfinals

LA SALLE EXPLORERS 10 – 4 – 2 Overall, 6 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 4 – 1 vs. George Mason at McCarthy Stadium

La Salle 4 George Mason 1 – The Explorers remained unbeaten in league play and Maryam Huseini set an all-time assist record on the first of her 3 assists in the game.  The record-breaking assist #34 came off a corner kick that Kelsey Haycook headed past the goal keeper that gave La Salle a 2 – 1 lead.  Huseini and Haycook connected again to make the score 3 – 1 in the 37th minute.  Gabriella Carbone was the recipient of the third assist (career assist number 36) of the game by Huseini.  Jessica Wiggins recorded 5 saves to earn her 10th win of the season.

Next Game – 10/31 at Duquesne

PENN QUAKERS 6 – 5 – 3 Overall, 1 – 3 – 1 Ivy League

ResultsTied 1 – 1 (2 OT) at Yale, Won 2 – 0 at Lehigh

Summary –

Penn 1 Yale 1 – Juliana Provini scored in the first half to give the University of Pennsylvania an early lead.  Yale tied the game in the 74th minute on a goal by Melissa Gavin.  Penn had chances in the extra period.  Erin Mikolai had a shot from 25 yards out that hit the crossbar.  Provini had another opportunity but her shot went over the bar.  Kalijah Terilli pushed a Yale chance over the crossbar in the final seconds of play.  Terilli made 5 saves.  Yale outshot Penn 13 – 11.

Penn 2 Lehigh 0 – Olivia Blaber opened the scoring for the University of Pennsylvania converting a bicycle kick.  Anna Estep added the insurance goal with 4:31 left in regulation.  Kalijah Terilli made 8 saves in posting the sixth shutout of the season for the Red and Blue.

Next Game – 11/1 vs. Brown at Rhodes Field

SAINT JOSEPH’S HAWKS 10 –8 – 0 Overall, 3 – 4 – 0 Atlantic 10

Result – Lost 1 – 0 (OT) at Fordham

Summary –

Fordham 1 Saint Joseph’s 0(OT) – The Rams scored a goal 15 seconds into the overtime by Maria Canictti to hand the Hawks a 1 – 0 defeat.  Fordham outshot Saint Joe’s 11 – 9.  Emily Gingrich and Shannon Mulvey had 4 shots apiece for the Hawks.  Allison Ebling made 4 saves for SJU.

Next Game – 10/31 at George Mason

TEMPLE OWLS 11 – 7 –1 Overall, 3 – 5 – 1 AAC

Results – Won 1 – 0 at Delaware State, Lost 3 – 0 vs. Connecticut at the Ambler Sports Complex

Summary –

Temple 1 Delaware State 0 – The Owls scored the game-winner in the 24th minute on a goal by Kelly Farrell who leads the team with 8 this season.  With the win the Cherry and White tied the record for most wins in season in program history.  Temple had a 20 – 3 advantage in shots.  Goal Keeper Shauni Kerkhoff registered her 6th shutout of the season.

Connecticut 3 Temple 0 – The Huskies gained control early scoring 41 seconds into the game.  UConn added to the lead at the 6:02 mark.  The Owls had quality attempts and two corner kicks, but could not find the back of the net.

Temple secured the 8th seed in the upcoming AAC Tournament and will face 9th seeded SMU.  The winner will face the top seed UCF Knights in Orlando.

Next Game – 10/31 vs. SMU AAC Quarterfinal

VILLANOVA WILDCATS 5 – 8 – 4 Overall, 3 – 3 – 2 Big East

Results – Tied 1 – 1 (2 OT) at Georgetown

Summary –

Villanova 1 Georgetown 1 (2 OT) – The Wildcats got a goal to record a come from behind tie against the Hoyas of Georgetown.  Emily Damstrom scored on a penalty kick to tie the game 8 minutes after the Georgetown tally.

The tie clinched a berth in the Big East Tournament for Villanova.

Next Game – 10/31 at Providence
