Penn Gets Their 4th Straight Shutout and Assures Their 14th Consecutive Winning Season Under Darren Ambrose

Week of October 9 – 16, 2013 Games

DREXEL 5 – 9 – 1 Overall, 1 – 4 – 0 CAA

Results – Lost 1 – 0 vs. Northeastern, Won 2 – 1 vs. Hofstra both at Vidas Field

Summary –

Northeastern 1 Drexel 0 – The Dragons came out with a flurry outshooting the Huskies 7 – 2 in the first half.  But they could not beat the goal keeper.  Northeastern got the only score of the game in the 51st minute when Lahaina Zoller beat Drexel junior goal keeper Eve Badana high to the right side of the net.  Badana recorded 6 saves in the contest.

Drexel 2 Hofstra 1 – It was Senior Day for Drexel.  Jess Sarkisian, Andi Stampone, and Christine Stevenson were honored before the game.  With their 2 – 1 win this group became the winningest senior class in program history.  The Dragons also got their first conference win of the season.  Junior forward Megan Hammaker got the first goal for Drexel.  After the Pride tied the game sophomore Lauren Stollar got the lead back for the Dragons.  Badana recorded 6 saves.

Next Game – 10/18 at Delaware

LA SALLE 9 – 3 – 2 Overall, 1 – 1 – 1 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 1 – 0 at George Washington, Tied 2 – 2 at VCU

Summary –

George Washington 1 LaSalle 0 – The Explorers had their 19-game Atlantic 10 regular season winning streak snapped.  Jane Wallis got the goal for the Colonials.  LaSalle had 18 shots in the game.  Courtney Niemiec and Renee Washington each had 4 shots in the contest.

LaSalle 2 VCU 2 – The Rams took a 2-goal lead into halftime.  LaSalle battled back behind two second half goals by junior forward Kelsey Haycook.  Sophomore defender Kari Nickles assisted on both Haycook goals.

Next Game – 10/18 vs. Saint Joseph’s at McCarthy Stadium

PENN – 8 – 1 – 3 Overall, 2 – 1 – 0 Ivy League

ResultsWon 1 – 0 at Columbia, Won 1 – 0 (OT) at Navy

Summary –

Penn 1 Columbia 0 – The Red and Blue was the beneficiary of a Columbia own goal, and it was enough to give Penn the victory.  The goal came off a corner kick 5 minutes into the contest.  In the scramble the ball went off a Columbia defender and into the goal.  The Quakers outshot the Lions 8 – 7.  Penn senior goal keeper Kalijah Terilli made 2 saves.  The Lions keeper Allison Spencer made 6 saves.Darren Ambrose

Penn 1 Navy 0 (OT) – The Quakers scored on a penalty kick at 2:19 of the first overtime period to earn the victory over Navy.  It was the 200th program victory for Penn.  The win also assured another winning season for the team and Coach Darren Ambrose.  The Quakers have recorded a winning season in each of the 14 years under Ambrose.  Senior forward Kelly Scalora scored the goal, her team-leading fifth of the season.  Terilli recorded another shutout, the fourth straight clean slate for the Red and Blue.

Next Game – 10/19 vs. Dartmouth at Rhodes Field

SAINT JOSEPH’S 5 –5 – 3 Overall, 1 – 1 – 1 Atlantic 10

Result – Won 2 – 0 vs. George Washington at Sweeney Field

Summary –

Saint Joseph’s 2 George Washington 0 – Two first half goals ten minutes apart provided the margin of victory for the Hawks.  Senior forward Mo Hawkins scored at the 24:59 mark.  Later in the opening half SJU was the beneficiary of a GWU own goal for the second tally.  The Hawks senior goal keeper Lauren Jancuska made 5 saves to record her fifth shutout of the season.

Next Game – 10/18 at LaSalle

TEMPLE 6 – 7 – 1 Overall, 1 – 4 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 3 – 1 at Connecticut

Summary –

Connecticut 3 Temple 1 – The Huskies went out to a three goal lead in the first 46 minutes.  It proved to be too steep of a hill to climb for the Owls.  UConn outshot Temple 33 – 5 in the game.  Sophomore goal keeper Shauni Kerkhoff made a career-high 15 saves for Temple.  Sophomore forward Erin Lafferty scored off a penalty kick in the 73rd minute to avert the shutout.

Next Game – 10/17 vs. Louisville at the Ambler Sports Complex

VILLANOVA 5 – 6 – 3 Overall, 2 – 2 – 1 Big East

Results – Tied 1 – 1 at St. John’s

Summary –

Villanova 1 St. John’s 1 – Each team scored within a minute of each other in the game’s 48th minute.  Despite the late game pressure no more goals were scored resulting in the tie.  Sophomore forward Hayley Wilson scored the Villanova goal.  Senior goal keeper Jami Kranich made 6 saves for the Wildcats.  St. John’s had a 19 – 10 edge in shots on goal, 5 – 3 in the extra periods.

Next Game – 10/17 vs. Creighton at the West Campus Soccer Complex
