Alicia Cropper and Leeza Burdgess – La Salle

In a big week for the Explorers Cropper scored a career-high 23 points against conference foe VCU. Cropper scored 7 points and had 6 assists against Massachusetts. Burdgess contributed a double-double, her fourth of the campaign against VCU, scoring 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

LA SALLE 9 – 7 Overall, 4 – 0 Atlantic 10, 0 – 3 Big Five

Results – Won 63 – 58 vs. VCU, Won 78 – 41 vs. Massachusetts at the Gola Arena

Summary –

La Salle 63 VCU 58 – The Explorers withstood a late rally and handed VCU their second loss of the season. Alicia Cropper exploded for a career-high 23 points for La Salle. Leeza Burdgess recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. La Salle went above the.500 mark.

La Salle 78 Massachusetts 41 – The roll continues for the Explorers as they are 4 – 0 in conference play for the first time since 1995-96 season. The 37 point margin of victory was their largest since 1998-98 in an 81 – 44 decision against Rhode Island. Michaya Owens scored a career-high 23 points for the Explorers. Alicia Cropper scored 7 points and handed out 6 assists. La Salle had a season-high 23 assists on their 32 field goals.

PENN 8 – 3 Overall, 0 – 1 Ivy League, 1 – 0 Big Five

Results – Won 85 – 51 at Morgan State, Lost 84 – 53 vs. Princeton

Summary –

Penn 85 Morgan State 51 – The Red and Blue set a program record winning its eighth straight non-conference game. Thirteen of the fifteen Penn players scored in the game. Guard Alyssa Baron and forward Katy Allen led the way with 14 points. Freshman Sydney Stipanovich added 13 points. The Quakers made 29 of 55 field goal attempts (52.7%) and had 21 assists. This was the largest margin of victory under Coach Mike Mc Laughlin.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 10 – 2 Overall, 2 – 2 Atlantic 10, 2 – 0 Big Five

Results –

Won 72 -35 vs. Rhode Island at the Hagan Arena, Lost 73 – 69 at VCU

Summary –

Saint Joseph’s 72 Rhode Island 35 – The Hawks led wire to wire easily out distancing the Rams. The game was decided early when SJU went out to a 30 – 7 lead. Sophomore guard Ciara Andrews paced Saint Joe’s with 13 points. Sarah Fairbanks and Erin Shields added 12 points apiece. Shields also dished out 6 assists. Forward Ilza Gotfrida had 9 points and 10 rebounds. The Hawks assisted on 20 of 25 baskets.

VCU 73 Saint Joseph’s 69 – The Hawks trailed by 6 at halftime, but came out with a 13 – 4 run to start the second half to take a 50 – 47 lead. Each team battled, and the game was tied at 69 with 3 minutes to play. VCU’s Keira Robinson gave her team the lead with a layup with 1:20 to play. Saint Joe’s would come up empty at the end on offense. Sarah Fairbanks led the Hawks with 14 points, while Ciara Andrews and Erin Shields had 13 each. Ilza Gotfrida pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds.

Next Game – 1/17 vs. Penn at the Hagan Arena, 1/19 at La Salle

TEMPLE 8 – 7 Overall, 2 – 3 AAC, 1 – 2 Big Five

Results – Lost 64 – 51 at USF, Lost 80 – 36 at #1 Connecticut

Summary –

USF 64 Temple 51 – The Owls opened the second half with an 11 – 4 run to cut the deficit to 3 points. The Bulls answered with a 15 – 3 run to go ahead by 55 – 40 and never looked back. Guard Feyonda Fitzgerald paced the Cherry and White with 17 points. Natasha Thames registered her third double-double of the season with 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Shi-Heria Shipp had 10 points.

#1 Connecticut 80 Temple 36 – The Owls were competitive over the first 10 minutes leading 6 – 5. UConn answered with a 13 – 4 run to lead by 10 with 8:20 remaining in the first half. In the second half the Owls scored just 14 points. Guard Erica Covile led the Cherry and White with 13 points. Temple out-rebounded UConn 42 – 39, but 37 turnovers by the Owls gave the Huskies a 27 – 8 edge in points off turnovers. Bria Hartley led UConn with 19 points.

Next Games – 1/14 vs. SMU at McGonigle Hall, 1/18 at Cincinnati

VILLANOVA 12 – 3 Overall, 3 – 2 Big East, 2 – 1 Big Five

Results – Won 70 – 48 at Butler, Lost 64 – 56 vs. Seton Hall at The Pavilion

Summary –

Villanova 70 Butler 48 – This was the 650th win in the career of Villanova Coach Harry Perretta. He is now 650 – 406 in his 36-year Wildcat career. The Wildcats took control of the game with four three-point baskets in the first 3:33 of the second half. Overall, the Wildcats out-scored the Bulldogs 42 – 18 in the latter stanza. Guard Kendall Burton led the Wildcats with a career-high 17 points on 6 – 25 shooting, 5 of 13 from distance (another career-best mark in made threes). Devon Kane added 11 points and 6 assists, while Taylor Holeman had 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Seton Hall 64 Villanova 56 – The Wildcats saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. The Pirates led 36 – 26 at halftime that the Wildcats erased with a 12 – 2 run to start the second half. The game went back and forth from that point. Seton Hall forward Bra’shey Ali put her team ahead with a driving layup at 59 – 56. The Pirates ended the game going 5 of 6 from the free throw line. Devon Kane paced Villanova with 16 points making 4 of 6 three-pointers. Ka-Deidre Simmons led all scorers with 25 points.

DREXEL 6 – 8 Overall, 1 – 0 CAA

Results – Won 68 – 55 vs. College of Charleston

Summary –

Drexel 68 College of Charleston 55 – The Dragons earned their first conference win of the season by getting the ball inside. Forward Abby Reddick set personal highs with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while front court mate Sarah Curran scored 11 points. Drexel had a 42 – 22 margin in points in the paint. For the game the Dragons made 50.9% of their shots (29 – 57). Guards Meghan Creighton and Rachel Pearson added 11 and 10 points for Drexel.
