Natasha Cloud scored 35 points and added 21 assists in leading Saint Joseph’s to a pair of Big Five victories.  Cloud also added 7 rebounds against Villanova.  She had a game-high 21 points in the win at Temple.

Week of December 2 – December 9, 2012 Games

LA SALLE 3 – 4 Overall, 0 – 1 Big Five

Results – Lost 64 – 54 vs. Penn at the Gola Arena, Won 73 – 59 at William & Mary

Summary –

Penn 64 La Salle 54 – The Red and Blue used an 11 – 2 run midway through the second half to pull away for the first Big Five victory of the4 season.  Penn lead by 6 points at the time.  Guard Alyssa Baron scored a game-high 23 points.  Forward Kara Bonenberger added 10 for the Quakers.  Michaya Owens freshman forward was the only double figures scorer for the Explorers with 10 points.  Penn shot 21 – 62 (41.1%) while La Salle was 23 of 75 (30.7%), and 3 of 24 from beyond the arc.

La Salle 73 William & Mary 59 – The Explorers shot the ball well in Harrisonburg, VA 57.1% from the field and 4 of 7 from deep.  Two Explorers set career-highs in scoring; Leeza Burgess scored 20 points and forward Siobhan Beslow added a career-best 11 points.  La Salle pushed out to an 18 point lead at 47 – 29 with 16:58 to play behind a 10 – 3 run to start the second half.

Next Game – 12/15 vs. Villanova at the Gola Arena

PENN 3 – 2 Overall, 1 – 0 Big Five

Results – Won 64 – 54 at La Salle, Won 70 – 57 vs. LIU Brooklyn at The Palestra, Won 69 – 61 at Bucknell

Summary –

Penn 64 La Salle 54 – The Red and Blue used an 11 – 2 run midway through the second half to pull away for the first Big Five victory of the4 season.  Penn lead by 6 points at the time.  Guard Alyssa Baron scored a game-high 23 points.   Forward Kara Bonenberger added 10 for the Quakers.  Michaya Owens was the only double figures scorer for the Explorers with 10 points.  Penn shot 21 – 62 (41.1%) while La Salle was 23 of 75 (30.7%), and 3 of 24 from beyond the arc.

Penn 70 LIU Brooklyn 57 – The Red and Blue struggled at the start falling behind by double digits ion the first six minutes.  However, Penn recovered and turned that deficit into a double-digit lead over the last 34 minutes of action.  It took a 13 – 4 run at the start of the second half to give the host Quakers their first lead at 38 – 37.  From there Penn never looked back.  A 12 – 2 run put Penn in front 62 – 51 with 2:58 to play.  Forwards Kara Bonenberger and Sydney Stipanovich scored in double figures with 13 points each.  Alyssa Baron was the leading scorer with 15 points, 11 in the second half.

Penn 68 Bucknell 61 – The second half opened with Penn scoring the first 15 points to get a 47 – 23 lead with 16 minutes to play.  The lead would grow to as many as 24 points midway through the second half before Bucknell would make the score respectable getting to within 6 points with 41 seconds left.  Forward Sydney Stipanovich recorded her first career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.  Kara Bonenberger put in 16 points.  Bucknell only got 3 offensive rebounds and no second chance points.

Next Game – 12/11 vs. Army at The Palestra

SAINT JOSEPH’S 8 – 1 Overall, 2 – 0 Big Five

Results – Won 73 – 53 at Temple, Won 63 – 60 at Villanova

Summary –

Saint Joseph’s 73 Temple 53 – Hawks guard Natasha Cloud scored 21 points and handed out 13 assists leading her team to a Big Five victory over rival Temple.  The Hawks grabbed the momentum in the second half.  With the score tied at 36 Saint Joseph’s went on a 12 – 2 run to open a 48 – 38 lead with 12:50 remaining.  The Owls crawled back in the game to make it 51 – 45 midway through the second half, but Saint Joe’s would put the game away with a 13 – 1 run over the next three minutes.  It was the first win for the Hawks on the Owls court since 2003.  Forward Ilza Gotfrida added 12 points and Sarah Fairbanks pulled down 9 rebounds for Saint Joe’s.  Natasha Thames led the Owls in scoring with 19 points.

Saint Joseph’s 63 Villanova 60 – It was a typical Saint Joe’s – Villanova battle, a treat to watch.  Villanova held a 50 – 45 lead that Saint Joseph’s would answer by scoring the next 10 points to earn a 55 – 50 advantage with 4:40 to play.  Villanova stormed back to take a 60 – 59 lead on a jumper by Caroline Coyer at the 2:03 mark.  Ciara Andrews gave the lead back to the Hawks making a layup with1:48 to play.  Saint Joe’s made a defensive stop and got a jumper in the lance by Natasha Cloud at the 1:08 mark to give the Hawks their margin of victory.  Villanova had chances late, and got possession on a jump ball with8 seconds left, but could not make a game-tying shot.  Saint Joseph’s guard Erin Shields scored a game-high 15 points.  Andrews contributed a career-high 14 points.  But it was Natasha Cloud who filled the stat sheet scoring 14 points, taking down 7 rebounds, and handed out 8 assists.  The Villanova trio of Emily Leer, Caroline Coyer, and Taylor Holeman scored 12 points each.

Next Game – 12/10 vs. Hofstra at the Hagan Arena

TEMPLE 4 – 2 Overall, 0 – 1 Big Five

Results – Lost 73 – 53 vs. Saint Joseph’s at McGonigle Hall

Summary –

Results – Lost 63 – 60 vs. Saint Joseph’s at The Pavilion

Summary –

DREXEL 2 – 5 Overall

Results – Lost 65 – 60 at Colgate, Lost 47 – 41 at American U

Summary –

Colgate 65 Drexel 60 – The Dragons placed four players in double figures, and held a 53 – 51 lead with 3:40 remaining.  Colgate reestablished themselves scoring the next 5 points and held off Drexel to get the win.  The Dragons made 8 of 14 free throws all in the second half.   Meghan Creighton led the Dragons with 14 points, Rachel Pearson and Fiona Flanagan added 13 points each, and Sarah Curran added 10 points and 6 rebounds.

American U 47 Drexel 41 – The Dragons dropped their fourth game in a row in Washington.  Cold shooting Drexel went without a field goal for 10 minutes in the second half.  For the game the Dragons made 4 of 21 three-pointers.  Sarah Curran led the team with 9 points.  Fiona Flanagan pulled down 12 rebounds.
