Philly College Sports.com Player of the Week – Tyonna Williams, Temple University

Temple went on a two game winning streak this week thanks to some added scoring. Leading the way for the Owls was Tyonna Williams who led the team in scoring in the wins against Richmond and Massachusetts. She averaged over 21 points and 7 assists per game. Against Massachusetts Williams set a career-high scoring mark of 23 points.

Week of January 28 – February 3, 2013 Games

LA SALLE 7 – 14 Overall, 3 – 3 Atlantic 10, 1 – 2 Big Five

Results – Won 68 – 57 at Massachusetts, Lost 74 – 57 at George Washington

Summary –

LaSalle 68 Massachusetts 57 – Brittany Wilson went to the foul line 14 times in the game and made all 14 scoring a game-high 30 points to lead the Explorers to their second straight victory. Wilson took down 5 rebounds, added 5 assists, and added 3 steals and 2 blocked shots. Shanel Harrison scored 15 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Ebonee Jones had 12 points and 8 rebounds for the Explorers.

George Washington 74 LaSalle 57 – The game remained close as the Explorers trailed 40 – 37 with 10:15 remaining in the game. GW’s Tara Booker hit back to back three-pointers to spark a 13 – 0 run for the Colonials who lead 53 – 37 at the 7:51 mark. From that point GW stretched the lead to as many as 21 points. LaSalle shot 32.8% from the floor and was 2 of 14 from deep. At the free throw line LaSalle was a perfect 11 of 11. GW made 47.5% of their field goal attempts. Ebonee Jones led LaSalle with 21 points and added 4 assists and 3 steals. Shanel Harrison scored 12 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Jordan Mosley added 10 points. LaSalle played without Brittany Wilson, Jess Koci, and Michea Bryant who missed the game due to injury.

PENN – 9 – 8 Overall, 2 – 1 Ivy League, 1 – 3 Big Five

Results – Won 52 – 40 at Columbia, Won 65 – 56 at Cornell

Summary –

Penn 52 Columbia 40 – The Red and Blue broke a 3 game losing streak by playing tough defense in the second half against the Lions. Penn allowed 9 points, 2 baskets, and forced 111 turnovers in the half. The Lions made just one basket in the first 18 minutes of the latter stanza. The Quakers needed it as they trailed 35 – 32 seven minutes after halftime. Penn ended the game on a 20 – 5 run keyed by Alyssa Baron who scored 13 of her 14 points in that final run. Baron started the run with two consecutive field goals. Baron added 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and 6 assists.

Penn 65 Cornell 56 – The Red and Blue completed an Ivy Weekend sweep in New York for the first time since 2005. Cornell jumped out to an 11 – 3 lead, but Penn got back into the contest trailing 25 – 24 at halftime. In the second half forward Kara Bonenberger and guard Keiera Ray rook over scoring a combined 30 second half points to propel the Quakers to the victory. The duo got Penn off to a 19 – 6 run to take control. Cornell did get to within single digits at the 2:57 mark, but did not threaten the Quakers. Bonenberger scored 22 points, 15 after halftime. Ray scored all of her 15 points in the second half. Alyssa Baron was held to 3 points, but did contribute 10 rebounds and 5 assists.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 15 –5 Overall, 6 – 0 Atlantic 10, 1 – 1 Big Five

Results – Won 57 – 50 vs. Butler at the Hagan Arena, Won 78 – 51 at Rhode Island

Summary –

Saint Joseph’s 57 Butler 50 – It took a 17 – 4 Hawk run in the last 11 minutes to pass the Bulldogs and stay undefeated in Atlantic 10 play. Ashley Robinson scored all of her 11 points in the deciding run. Chatilla van Grinsven recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Ashley Prim added 8 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals. Daress McClung had a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds for Butler.

Saint Joseph’s 78 Rhode Island 51 – The Hawks won their seventh straight and remain unbeaten in Atlantic 10 play. Saint Joe’s is 6 – 0 in conference for the first time since 2003-04. SJU opened the game with a 13 – 2 run and never looked back. The lead grew to as many as 32 points in the second half. Chatilla van Grinsven led the team with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Erin Shields added 14 points. As a team Saint Joseph’s shot 31 – 56 from the field. The Hawks were 17 of 28 (60.7%) in the second half. The Hawks were 4 of 15 from deep and made 12 of 14 free throws. The Rams were limited to 32.1% shooting (18 – 56).

Next Game – 2/6/2013 at VCU

TEMPLE 10 – 11 Overall, 3 – 3 Atlantic 10, 1 – 2 Big Five

Results – Won 61 – 48 vs. Richmond at McGonigle Hall, Won 66 – 54 at Massachusetts

Summary –

Temple 61 Richmond 48 – Four players scored in double figures for the Owls getting a game-high 17 points and 6 assists from Tyonna Williams. Sally Kabengano, Victoria Macaulay, and Rateska Brown scored 12 points each. Defense was a key for Temple who forced 5 turnovers on the first 8 Richmond possessions. Getting an early 6 points off turnovers Temple went out to an 8 – 2 lead. Temple used a 10 – 4 run over the final 2:24 of the first half to take a 29 – 18 lead into the locker room. The Owls put the game away early in the second half holding Richmond without a field goal for five minutes and an 8 -0 run gave the Owls a 10-point lead. Temple forced 17 turnovers and took a 26 – 8 edge in points off turnovers.

Temple 66 Massachusetts 54 – The Owls went into the locker room leading by 26 – 25. Temple would open the second half with a 13 – 2 run early in the second half to take control. Tyonna Williams scored a career-high 23 points and handed out 8 assists. Rateska Brown scored 21 points, one below her career-high. Victoria Macaulay registered her ninth double-double of the season scoring 14 points and 12 rebounds. Natasha Thames was credited with 10 rebounds. Temple is on a two-game winning streak.

Tyonna Williams was named the Philadelphia Big Five Player of the Week.

VILLANOVA 16 – 5 Overall, 5 – 3 Big East, 4 – 0 Big Five

Results – Lost 76 – 43 at #2 Connecticut, Lost 58 – 50 (OT) at Rutgers

Summary –

#2 Connecticut 76 Villanova 43 – The Huskies took a 7 – 0 lead two minutes into the game. Later in the half a Rachel Roberts layup for Villanova kept the deficit at ten points 17 – 10. Connecticut answered with a 20 – 4 run to open a 37 – 14 lead with 7:47 remaining in the first half, then stretched the lead to 44 – 17 at halftime. Villanova got no closer than 24 points for the rest of the game. Jesse Carey led Villanova with 9 points, all three-pointers. The Wildcats were held to 27.6% shooting (16 of 58), and 20% from beyond the arc (9 – 21). The Huskies had a 48 – 28 rebounding advantage. The Wildcats turned the ball over just 6 times.

Rutgers 58 Villanova 50 (OT) – A Laura Sweeney layup with 7:25 to play gave Villanova a 44 – 36 lead. The Wildcats would score just two more points in regulation. Rutgers’ Shakena Richardson made one of two free throws at the 8 second mark to send the game into overtime. The Scarlet Knights

scored the first 6 points of the extra period. The Wildcats got to within 4, but the task got tougher when Sweeney fouled out of the game. Sweeney led Villanova with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and added 5 assists and 4 steals. Rachel Roberts scored 10 points.

Next Game – 2/5/2013 vs. #2/3 Notre Dame at the Pavilion

DREXEL 14 – 6 Overall, 7 – 2 CAA

Results – Lost 53 – 50 at ODU, Won 79 – 55 vs. Georgia State at the DAC

Summary –

Old Dominion 53 Drexel 50 – The Dragons ran out of “Comeback Thursday” magic as the Monarchs held on for a 3-point win. Drexel was the victim of cold shooting especially in the first half when the team went scoreless for a 9-minute stretch and shot 21.2% from the floor. Good defense kept the Dragons in the game as ODU did not score a field goal for the first 7:27 of the game. Drexel led 10 – 2, but ODU answered with a 12 – 0 run. In the second half a 9 – 0 run put ODU ahead 35 – 22 with 15:54 to play. The Dragons fought back led by Hollie Mershon who made 5 of 8 shots in the latter half. Mershon scored a game-high 22 points. Drexel took a 47 – 46 lead when Mershon made both ends of a one-and-one. Jackie Cook made a three-pointer that gave ODU a lead they would not relinquish. Taylor Wootton made a three for Drexel with 7 seconds to go to cut the deficit to one point, but ODU made the free throws to end the game.

Drexel 79 Georgia State 55 – The Dragons stopped a two game skid with the home court victory. Drexel had a big second half as Hollie Mershon scored 25 and Taylor Wootton 20 in the game. It was the second time Drexel had two 20-point plus scorers in 10 days. Drexel shot 64% in the second half, 52.8% for the game. From a 2 point halftime lead the Dragons made it a 24 point win. All 10 players who saw the floor for Drexel scored.
